Actividad:
1. Pida a los estudiantes que lean los primeros dos párrafos de la Ley Pública 45 y Sección 501 de la Ley Pública 78. (Explique a los estudiantes que estarán leyendo documentos importantes; en este caso, una legislación que se relaciona con la creación e implementación de el Programa Bracero en los Estados Unidos) Haga que llenen la Hoja de Análisis de documento (adjunta).
Como un reto extra, considere pedirle a los estudiantes que describan cómo estas leyes encajan o contrastan a diferencia de otros programas puestos en marcha por los mismos presidentes involucrados (Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Harry S. Truman, y Lyndon B. Johnson).

Los estudiantes que no dominen el español pueden leer la transcripción en inglés). <br /><br /> 2. Haga que los estudiantes impriman la transcripción en inglés y que la lean. Pida a los estudiantes que subrayen con marca textos todas las secciones relacionadas al trabajo del Señor Loza, identificando: <br /> Cada estado y pueblo donde él trabajó Los cultivos que él cosechó Las fechas cuando se encontraba en esos lugares. <br /><br />3. <p>Para estudiantes con conocimientos históricos acerca del Programa Bracero, juzgue si Juan estaba mejor trabajando como bracero en Estados Unidos o quedándose en su tierra natal.</p>

Unfortunately my dad, who was a bracero during 1958-63, does not have any proof or evidence that he was actually a bracero worker back then. My dad recalls that after he became a legal US resident one time he was traveling from Tamaulipas to Houston, an immigration agent from the border in Hidalgo saw his bracero ID card in my dad’s wallet and kindly asked if he could have it for his personal collection purposes, so my dad gave him his card (I still cant believe my dad did this). My dad says the agent convinced him by saying he would never need it since the program was over and he was now a legal resident. He never knew the name of this agent. Now my dad has no other way to prove his background as bracero since he never imagined he would sometime in his life need his id, check stubs or contracts from these companies that were enrolled in the bracero programs back then. He can’t recall the names of the companies he worked for since he would work for a company for a month and then work for another one the next month and since the companies names were in English it would be more difficult for him to remember the names. My Dad is currently living in Houston Texas. If you have a family member who had his bracero id card collected by an Hidalgo border agent perhaps together we can investigate about this person or testify about this as a group. Does anyone out there knows anything about immigration agents who got these bracero id cards for personal collection purposes please contact me at tamu50@hotmail.com.. Is there a place here in texas or in mexico that perhaps has records of all these bracero people who worked in the US back then?
Lamentablemente mi padre que fue bracero desde 1958-63 no cuenta con ningun tipo de evidencia para probar que fue uno de estos trabajadores. Mi padre dice que despues de haber arreglado su residencia y al cruzar el puente hacia los estados unidos,un oficial de la immigracion (nunca supo su nombre) en hidalgo texas le pidio cortesmente la identificacion de bracero al versela en su cartera diciendole que el las estaba coleccionando y que ya no la iba a necesitar lo cual mi papa hizo (que se me hace increible que mi padre haya hecho esto ya que es una persona muy desconfiada con documentos importantes sobre todo tarjetas de identificacion) y ahora no sabe como mostrar evidencia ya que jamas imagino que iba a necesitar sus talones de cheques o contratos alguna ves en su vida, mi padre vive en Houston, Texas, Si tienes algun familiar que le paso lo mismo con su tarjeta con algun agente de Hidalgo, alomejor juntos podemos averiguar o testiguar que hubo alguien en immigracion coleccionando estas tarjetas de identificacion..Alguien tiene informacion sobre trabajadores de imigracion que estuvieron coleccionando estas tarjetas porfavor contacteme a tamu50@hotmail.com??...hay algun lugar aqui en texas que hayan guardado records de toda esta gente que venia a trabajar aca?

Síntesis Biográfica del Entrevistado: Mario Bañuelos nació en Jerez, Zacatecas, México en 1930. Recibió educación formal hasta la escuela media, en 1951 el Programa Bracero era muy popular en su hogar en Zacatecas, por lo cual a la edad de veinte años decidió convertirse en bracero. Trabajó en el programa durante ocho años en Pecos, Texas.
Resumen de la Entrevista: El Sr. Bañuelos fue contratado como bracero en un centro de reclutamiento en Zacatecas, México; recuerda que había otros centros de reclutamiento en los estados de Sonora, Chihuahua y Aguascalientes en México. Había dos tipos de braceros: especializados y comunes. A los braceros especializados los contrataban por dieciocho meses y recibían salarios más elevados; a los braceros comunes los contrataban de tres meses; él trabajó como bracero especializado pesando algodón; su trabajo era asegurarse de que no se mezclara el algodón con piedras, maderas o ningún otro objeto que aumentara el peso del algodón. Como a los braceros se les pagaba mensualmente según el algodón que recolectaran, esta gestión era primordial, también recuerda que de las tiendas de comestibles iban hasta las granjas a buscar las listas de mandados a fin de obtener nuevos clientes entre los braceros y mantenerlos; luego les llevaban las compras a domicilio.

MP: Buenas tardes señor XX.
XX: Buenas tardes.
MP: Gracias por aceptar esta entrevista. Para empezar, quisiera que me dijera, ¿dónde y cuándo nació?
XX: Nací en Jerez, Zacatecas, 19 de enero, 1930.
MP: Okay, cuénteme algo de su niñez, sus papás, sus hermanos, el trabajo que hacía su papá.
XX: La labor del, el field.
MP: Y, ¿su mamá?
XX: Ama de casa. En el hogar.
MP: Usted tuvo, ¿fue a la escuela?, o, ¿cómo fue su niñez?
XX: Fui a la escuela, terminé hasta la secundaria.
MP: Y después de la secundaria, ¿qué hizo?
XX: Pos ya, como quien dice me vine para acá, me vine de veintiún años. Pasé el septiembre del [19]51.
MP: ¿Eso ya fue como bracero?
XX: Como bracero.
MP: ¿Cómo se dio cuenta del Programa Bracero?
XX: Eh, ¿este?
MP: No, de la primera vez que se contrató como bracero, ¿cómo se dio cuenta?
XX: No, pos es que en ese tiempo toda la gente… había ya allá, era muy popular venir uno de, que viniera la gente de bracero. Digo, porque los braceros empezaron a venir como en el [19]45. Entonces ya el [19]51 ya era una cosa pos sí, normal. El que quería se enlistaba y ya las listas las presentaban a las contrataciones, que eran en Chihuahua, había otro centro en Irapuato, en Empalme, Sonora. Pero yo me contraté en Aguascalientes, el [19]51. Que fue la única vez que hubo contrataciones en ese estado, en Aguascalientes. Ya después ya no hubo, después abrieron lo que es Chihuahua, lo que fue Chihuahua. Y ya de ahí nos, me vine para acá.
MP: Cuénteme, ¿cómo fue ese proceso de contratación? ¿Qué tenía que llevar?, ¿tenía que hacer filas?, ¿pasó mucho tiempo para que lo atendieran?
XX: La primer vez no. En Aguascalientes, no. De allá veníanos directamente ya pa este lado, pa Estados Unidos, ya como quien dice contratados. Y de ahí ya le, nos… Entonces, ya cuando entré yo, que fue en julio del [19]51, todavía no existía Río Vista. Entonces en, a esa gente nos pusieron en el Coliseo ya cuando pasamos. Y ya de ahí ya nos sacaron a directamente a La Asociación de Pecos.
MP: Ah, okay. ¿Y en…
XX: Y en el [19]53 que fue mi nueva contratación, entonces sí ya fue en Chihuahua. Entonces sí ya de Chihuahua, entonces ya vine a Río Vista. Y de allá nos regresamos otra vez a Pecos.

XX: Que yo, yo era de Zacatecas, no llevaba, no estaba en listas de Aguascalientes.
MP: ¿Entonces no hubo ningún problema de que estaba muy lleno?
XX: No.
MP: De que hubieran eran las filas.
XX: No, no, eso en Aguascalientes no, en Chihuahua sí.
MP: Y algún documento que usted tuvo que llevar o, ¿qué le pidieron?, algún requisito.
XX: Eh, nomás la cartilla, el acta de nacimiento.
MP: Y luego de Zacatecas, la primera vez, de Zacatecas a Aguascalientes, ¿usted se fue solo?, o, ¿fue alguien con usted acompañándolo?
XX: No, yo nomás. Yo y otro compañero que iba al igual que yo también a, contratado. Pero ya de en Aguascalientes, ya de ahí salimos ya con, como quien dice, con documentación hecha y todo, a pasar directamente aquí al [El] Paso.
MP: ¿Qué le motivó?, ¿por qué se decidió venirse como bracero?
XX: Pues la aventura, de chavalo. Pos la aventura nomás.
MP: ¿Ustedes tuvieron que pagar algo de Aguascalientes a acá a El Paso?
XX: No.
MP: Algún hospedaje, alguna alimentación, ¿nada?
XX: No, no, no, nos trajeron ya de Aguascalientes, nos pusieron en el tren directamente a Ciudad Juárez. Y en Ciudad Juárez ya nos estaban esperando, pues sí, representantes de aquí de La Asociación o de La Migración, así. Pasamos y nomás una noche duramos en lo que es, es el Coliseo. Y otro día salimos a Pecos. Y ya en Pecos, en La Asociación, ya llegan los rancheros a solicitar gente.
MP: Y ahí en el Coliseo, o sea que en el Coliseo también fue algo muy rápido ¿no?, no tenía…
XX: Pues sí fue, fue de repentino, ¿ve? Porque como le digo, todavía no estaba Río Vista y me imagino que ya pa el… yo entré el [19]51, en julio. Y como en septiembre yo creo ya hicieron el… Cuando para entró la gente a piscar algodón, que ya entraron mayor cantidad.
MP: ¿Le tuvieron que hacer algún examen médico?, ¿vacunas o algo?
XX: Sí.
MP: ¿Ahí en el Coliseo?, o, ¿desde antes?
XX: No en la, nosotros ya de esa vez en Aguascalientes, allá nos hicieron todo.
MP: Ah, okay.
XX: Rayos X, vacuna y todo. Pero la segunda vez, entonces sí en Cielo Vista le hacían a uno todo. Rayos X, vacunas, todo. Lo chequean a uno bien.
MP: Y no, ¿no tuvo ningún problema de que salió mal en el…
XX: No.
MP: ¿No?, nada, ¿nunca?
XX: Nada.
MP: Y luego, ya de aquí del Coliseo a Pecos, a ver, cuénteme cómo era Pecos.
XX: Pecos era un pueblo muy chico. Parece que tengo entendido yo, que ese año, el [19]51, fueron los primeros braceros que entraron, pero a Texas, a Nuevo México ya habían entrado, a Texas. Porque no, no había gente en digamos, los rancheros, muchos ranchos eran de… asina no tenían riego. No tenían, pos eran de temporal. Y ranchos había pocos, mucho muy chicos, pero ya del [19]52 empezaron a abrir mucho rancho nuevo, ¡muchos!
MP: Y entonces me dice que en Pecos era de puro algodón.
XX: Sí, puro algodón, puro piscar algodón.
MP: Y usted la primera vez que, era la primera vez [de] usted aquí en Estados Unidos, ¿verdad?
XX: Sí, yo entré en el [19]51 y duré de bracero hasta el [19]59, ocho años. Y del, y yo nomás me contraté dos veces, una en Aguascalientes y otra en Chihuahua. Pero ya después los mismos rancheros, nosotros éranos braceros especiales.
MP: ¿Por qué?
XX: Porque ya la gente, los rancheros tenían sus regadores, tractoristas, ¡todo! Y me imagino yo que pa no batallar enseñándoles nuevamente, entonces ya, yo cumplí el [19]52, entré septiembre, los contratos eran de dieciocho meses.
MP: Ah, okay.
XX: Entonces ya cuando cumplí los dieciocho meses, nosotros salimos a Eagle Pass. Y ahí nomás salimos a Piedras Negras, que viene siendo México, la frontera con Eagle Pass salimos nomás media hora. Y de ahí nos regresamos con otro contrato de dieciocho meses. Por eso eran los especiales.
MP: ¿Por qué la mayoría de los contratos los daban por menos tiempo?
XX: Por lo regular, como le digo, mire, hubo dos clases de braceros. El bracero que iba a piscar, ese iba nomás por tres meses. Y el especial no, pos ése se quedaba allá lo que el patrón lo ocupara. Por eso le, nosotros, yo duré tanto tiempo como especial. Una vez salí a Eagle Pass y otra vez salimos aquí a Waterfill, también igual. Y ya de Waterfill regresábanos y ahí en el Río Vista nos hacían el examen y entonces, ya íbamos a La Asociación a Pecos. Ya los rancheros que teníanos patrones, nosotros ya nomás iban y les hablábanos, nos recogían y…
MP: Y entonces, ¿cómo fue que a usted le dieron ese contrato de bracero especial? ¿Le tocó de la buena suerte o tuvo que trabajar mucho para ganárselo?
XX: Eh, ahí es cuestión ya del trabajador y que se especialice en algo. Porque como le digo, por eso nos decían especiales. Y de a yo y, despues mi especialidad fue de tractorista. Entonces todos los rancheros tenían sus regadores, sus tractoristas, y ellos eran los que, ellos les arreglaban contrato cada dieciocho meses, que nos sacaban a nomás a la frontera ya no nos contrataban, ya no íbanos a Chihuahua. Ya nomás salíanos ahí y nos regresabanos otro día, pero ya con otros dieciocho meses de contrato. Y ya le dio salida dos veces, una a Eagle Pass y otra aquí a Waterfill. Y ya a Waterfill regresamos a Cielo Vista y ya de ahí, llegaban en los camiones que tenían las asociaciones de Nuevo México, de Texas y todo, llegaba la de Pecos y en esas…
MP: Y en ésta, en esta primera vez que usted vino para acá, que el ranchero fue ahí a Pecos, usted fue, o sea, ¿no tenía otra opción más que ir?, o, ¿se podía esperar hasta que el próximo ranchero fuera?
XX: No, porque como yo era nuevo, yo no tenía patrón, entonces al que llegara. Así fue el primer patrón que tuve yo y con él me fui. Se acabó la pisca y entonces ya es cuando ellos dejan su gente para todo el, para todo el resto del año, ya regadores, tractores y todo. Y el patrón ese, me renovó el contrato, yo me quedé, fue del modo que me quedé. Ya después ya como le digo, ya era uno especial. Ya no andaba en contrataciones, ni nada. Y el [19]59 no sé, yo creo que se acabaron las especiales, porque ya cumplía el contrato y ya, tenía que ir a Chihuahua a contratarme otra vez. Pero ya también ya era mucho tiempo.
MP: Y ahí usted la… Cuando llegó al rancho, ¿sí era lo que usted se imaginaba que iba a ser?, o, ¿se imaginaba otra cosa?, ¿se desilusionó?
XX: No, porque yo estuve desde, yo nací en rancho como quien dice me crié en rancho, entonces yo el rancho pos lo conocía bien. Únicamente que no había piscado algodón porque pos allá no, no siembran algodón. Y fue, yo nomás pisqué un año. Ya al siguiente año ya, eh, ya agarré hueso. (risas)
MP: Ya agarró colmillo también.
XX: Sí pos ya en el segundo año, las siguientes piscas, ya me dieron báscula, ya era pesador yo. Llegaban los piscadores, cada báscula por lo regular tenía cien, cien piscadores cada báscula. Y ahí en el rancho, eran tres básculas. Entonces metían trescientos hombres. Y ahí nos acomodaban a los que ya teníanos tiempo ahí, unos… pesadores, otros surqueros, otros de traileros. Trailero era pa cuidar a los que piscaban el algodón que no echaran piedras, palos, porque a veces hasta pesaban el perro también. (risas)
MP: Para que pesara más y que le pagaran más.
XX: Pos sí, era así. Pues la gente le buscaba el modo, pero se daba cuenta el patrón de todos modos, porque cuando se hacía una hoja, en una hoja apuntaba uno todas las libras que llevaba la traila. Y esa traila cuando se llenaba iba a dar al gin. Y el gin, como absorbe masa a fuerza de aire, levantó el algodón, pero las piedras y palos no las levantaba, entonces el patrón se daba cuenta del…
MP: Lo que hace la gente, ¿no?, para ganar más dinero.
XX: Sí, sí, pos pa hacer dinero, bueno, la lucha se le hace. Y de todos modos como le digo, el patrón, el patrón se daba cuenta al último lo que iba en la traila, entonces por eso ponían el trailero. Y ése estaba arriba en la traila cuidando a los que estaban vaciando que no…
MP: O sea con el hecho de que usted era trailero, no era de que usted iba a manejar los tráilers llevando y trayendo.
XX: ¡No, no! El trailero está nomás arriba de la traila onde estaban vaciando el algodón que estaban piscando y cuidando lo que se está vaciando, pos que no llevara piedras.
MP: ¿Usted cree que tuvo algo que ver para que usted le dieran el nombre de bracero especial el que haya tenido escolaridad hasta secundaria?
XX: ¡No!
MP: ¿No?
XX: No, ahí no tiene que ver nada la escuela. Por ejemplo, si yo andaba como usted se daba cuenta en la, en la escuela pos de tractor y todo eso, no le enseñan. Acá uno es el que tiene que hacerse, pos sí, a manejar el tractor y toda esa cosa, entonces por eso lo dejaba uno espera… El regador, porque era especial pa regar. Cada quien tenía su especialidad. El tractorista, al tractor y el regador, a regador.
MP: Sí, no, le pregunto porque es la primera vez que me toca que alguien hizo hasta secundaria. Por lo general no llegan hasta…
XX: Pos la primaria…
MP: Quinto, cuarto.
XX: Sí, cuando… bueno, allá la primaria es hasta sexto.
MP: Sí.
XX: Ya la secundaria viene siendo como aquí high school.
MP: Sí.
XX: Que son tres años más, o cuatro, según.
MP: Platíqueme de su estancia ahí en el rancho.
XX: ¡Hum! Pos es…
MP: ¿Cómo era el lugar dónde vivía, donde dormía?
XX: Pos eh, es que yo cuando llegué éranos pocos.
MP: ¿Cuántos eran?
XX: Porque yo entré en julio. Entonces, a mí me llevaron como regador. Éranos cinco nada más. Que eran tres de día y dos de noche, los que regaban. Y ya después, cuando llegó la gente, entonces ya el patrón ya tenía otro, otro lugar, otro campo onde meter a la gente que iba a piscar. Nosotros seguimos nomás cinco.
MP: O sea que ustedes estaban separados de los demás.
XX: Sí.
MP: Los especiales los separaban de los demás.
XX: Los especiales eh, como yo por ejemplo en la… Duraba del [19]51 al [19]56 con un ranchero. Y luego de ahí me fui con otro, porque en el rancho onde estaba yo primero sobraban tractoristas y faltaban regadores. Y a donde me cambiaron, faltaban tractoristas y sobraban regadores, entonces a mí me cambiaron, regadores por…
MP: Por tractoristas.
XX: Por tractoristas.
MP: Y, ¿usted no tuvo que hacer algo en cuanto al contrato? Porque me imagino que en el contrato ahí dice a dónde van, ¿no?
XX: Sí, pero es la misma, era la misma asociación, el mismo Pecos. Entonces a mí nomás me llevaron a La Asociación, me entregó el patrón primero, entonces llegó el que ya iba a ser mi nuevo patrón. Y así nomás cambiaba uno, pero fuimos a dar a, nos sacaron a la, ¡nos tuvieron que llevar a La Asociación! Porque La Asociación llevaba el control de todos nosotros.
MP: Sí, de todas maneras para hacer el papeleo, ¿no?, tenía que quedarse.
XX: Ey, ahí está, ahí está todo, por eso, papeles nosotros, no tenemos ni un papel. Porque los papeles no, nosotros no firmamos ningún papel, si acaso el contrato, pero el contrato no se quedaba con nosotros. El contrato iba a dar a La Asociación.
MP: ¿Y la mica? Sí le daban mica, ¿no?
XX: Una tarjeta. Con eso cruzaba uno aquí el puente, con una tarjeta. La Migración ya sabía de que, que era bracero. Eso era todo lo que cargábanos nosotros cuando salíanos con permiso.
MP: Entonces, ¿por qué sería?, ¿por qué cree usted que los separaban?, los especiales de los…
XX: Eh pues, eh, es que ya estaba uno acostumbrado a que, a tener ahí lo más indispensable. No es lo mismo cuando llegaban a piscar que tenían un lugar como comedor y otro pa dormir. Entonces si eran cien o doscientos, o trescientos en un puro lugar pa cocinar y eso, pos taba poco trabajoso. Y nosotros no, pos acá estábanos aparte.
MP: Entonces usted tuvo, sí tuvo relación, ¿no?, con los demás braceros con los que eran…
XX: ¡Sí, sí! Inclusive con braceros de, que eran especiales, también en el otro rancho y todo, nos juntábanos por ejemplo en los restaurantes, en el pueblo pues, en Pecos. Los días de pago, ahí se conocían unos con otros y todo, porque casi por lo regular los especiales, eh, era porque ya tenían mucho tiempo ahí. Inclusive ya mucha gente ya ni pensaba que eran, que éranos braceros, porque nos conocíanos tanto. Y como le digo, el pueblo era chico no, no sé ahorita, yo desde [19]59 no he regresado. Y ya el [19]59 que ya no hubo contratación, sí había contrataciones en Chihuahua, pero tenía que ir a contratarme de nuevo y estaba muy pesado, los números mucho muy trabajosos y… Y hasta eso, el último patrón que tenía yo tenía un, pos sí, como alguien encargado de la gente de él ahí en Chihuahua. A mí me dijo: “Preséntate con él”. Pero yo ya no quise regresar.
MP: A ver, cuénteme eso de… Ahora vamos a brincarnos hasta allá cuando tuvo que irse a Chihuahua a contratar. ¿Ahí tuvo que empezar otra vez desde cero? Agarrar fila.
XX: No. Es que yo entré en el [19]51, en julio y salí el [19]53 en, como en febrero, marzo. Entonces duré un tiempo, que vine a agarrar número a Chihuahua pero me tocó un número mucho muy alto. Entonces, tuve que regresar yo hasta septiembre. Y en septiembre sí, ya tuve que contratarme en Chihuahua. Pero ya de ahí de esa contratación en Chihuahua, yo ya no me volví a contratar, me sacaban nomás como especial. Nos sacaban media hora a territorio mexicano y regresábanos con contrato de dieciocho meses. Por eso ahí decían especiales, por eso le digo yo que éranos braceros especiales.
MP: Entonces ustedes cuando iban a Chihuahua, también ya sabían que ahí había alguien por parte del ranchero.
XX: Bueno la, la primer vez no. Hasta ya cuando salí yo el [19]59, entonces fue ya cuando me dijeron que ahí había una persona que estaba encargada de la gente del ranchero onde estaba yo antes. Onde estuve al último pues, pero yo ya no quise, ya no quise ir. Entonces fue cuando empecé, empecé ya mejor a arreglar papeles.
MP: Y entonces, o sea éste representante del ranchero, estaba ahí para…
XX: Sí.
MP: Ahí luego luego agarrarlos y luego luego…
XX: Pues le dan a uno dirección y todo y entonces desde luego que el ranchero le da a uno una identificación, se la presentaban y ese hacía por… Pos ellos tenían enlaces ahí con gentes que estaban en la, onde estaban contratando y todo. Entonces ya, y luego pa contratarse uno en Chihuahua, ya tenían allá, ¡Migración! Migración de aquí.
MP: Y en Aguascalientes, ¿no había Migración de acá?
XX: No, no, en Chihuahua había tres emigrantes del, emigrantes, emigrantes. No de los que trabajan en los puentes, no, emigrantes. Y ese si lo dejaba pasar, bueno y si no, no hay nada.
MP: Y usted que con ese papelito que le daba el ranchero, ¿era ya más fácil?
XX: Ese, no…
MP: O sea, como identificación nada más.
XX: Ese no lo daban pa, ¡sí!, ese nos lo daban pa que… facilitarle entrar.
MP: Ándele.
XX: Pero ya pa arreglar, si el emigrante dice, decía que no, pos de nada sirvió el papelito, porque ya ese, ese al último se pusieron muy estrictos en cuestión a eso también. Que como quien dice, la gente la seleccionaban desde allá, que tenían emigrantes, eran tres y había unos que se estaban muy, muy estrictos. Si lo dejaba pasar vía libre y si no, pos se regresaba y pa hacerle la lucha, si en eso andaba.
MP: Y entonces, ya usted, ¿en qué estados anduvo acá trabajando?
XX: Bueno, ¿ya cuando arreglé?
MP: No, como bracero.
XX: No, como bracero nomás en…
MP: Nada más ahí en Pecos.
XX: Nomás en Pecos, ahí duré ocho años. Sí, el último rancho que estuve fue con este Billy Solestes. Ese señor tenía como cinco, seis ranchos, tenía varios ranchos. Así es que especiales con él éramos, sí, fácil, ¡como cien! Los que tenía nomás en especial, pa todos los ranchos que tenía. Que ya, ahí onde estaba yo, [ese] rancho se llama Flep Top. Ese rancho ocupaba, sí, como de treinta y cinco a cuarenta especiales, entre tractoristas y regadores. Sí, era muy grande, después tenía otros, ocupaba menos gente, pero de todos como eran varios los ranchos, ése, ése no ocupaba gente ni de mecánicos, ni weldeadores, o sea, todos los tenía ahí y braceros, porque en la braceriada, pos había de todo, mecánicos, carpinteros, todo, había de todo. Y él tenía toda su gente bracero, unos arreglaron papeles con él mismo, como dos mecánicos weldeadores, se me hace que también dos arreglaron.
MP: Y, ¿a usted nunca le dio la oportunidad?
XX: ¡Eh, sí! Pero yo pensaba que pa qué quería, pos si estaba yendo y viniendo fácil. Hasta ya cuando quise, ya estaba más trabajoso.
MP: Y, ¿cómo le hacía para comunicarse con su familia?
XX: Carta.
MP: Ellos se quedaron allá, ¿verdad?
XX: Sí, sí, por cartas. Por cartas, no, sí tiene uno correo seguido. Conforme, si se escribía seguido, pos seguido tenía carta, porque una vez uno precisamente, un…Pos no hubo problema porque pos si al que estaba ahí no le escribían, ¿pos cómo quería que le llegaran cartas? Porque el que llevaba las cartas era el patrón. Escribía uno algo, y ese pos le reclamó que llevaba cartas y que pa él no, dijo: “¿Qué culpa tengo? Pos que te escriban, pa traerte cartas”.
MP: Claro, si no pos, ¿cómo iba a recibir?
XX: Pa poder agarrar cartas.
MP: Y, ¿usted iba seguido para allá?, o, ¿no tenía tanta oportunidad de ir?
XX: Eh, iba de vez en cuando porque pos yo como le digo, pos yo taba, taba joven. Y ya me vine casando ya hasta el [19]58. Así que pos iba cada año, cada, cada año y medio así, pero no seguido. Por eso le digo que yo viví, la vida de bracero, la pasé bien porque pos nos daban todo.
MP: ¿Comida?
XX: No, la comida no.
MP: ¿No?
XX: La comida tenía que comprarla, pero ahí en de más todo le daban. Hubo transporte, cama, hasta cobijas le daban, cobijas, todo, todo.
MP: Y en cuanto a servicio médico, ¿también tenían?
XX: También, teníamos muy buena aseguranza. Ey, además, cada tres meses que se renovaba el contrato aunque estuviéramos especiales, llevaba, iban a renovar contratos que tenían ellos ahí no sé cómo le haciános, a nosotros nos representaba el cónsul que estaba en Marfa.
MP: ¿En Marfa?
XX: Cónsul Mexicano que está en Marfa. Ese, cada vez que se renovaba el contrato, él iba. Y entonces ahí, tenía que ir de, según la gente que hubiera en el rancho, uno, dos, si era mucha la gente que había en el rancho, iban tres. Por ejemplo, como ahí nosotros que éranos de treinta y cinco a cuarenta, iban tres. Y ése eh, él sí le habla el patrón. No, no, le faltaba a uno algo, ahí se lo decían a él. Y él, entonces el cónsul, y tenían que hacerlo.
MP: O sea que el cónsul, la función de él era checar que…
XX: Como representante.
MP: Ustedes recibieran un buen servicio.
XX: Como representante del Gobierno Mexicano, como nosotros pos éranos, semos mexicanos.
MP: Claro.
XX: ¿Ah? Y, y eso era el trabajo de él. Era el de Marfa, ahí esta el cónsul de Marfa. Porque me imagino que ahí el condado ese pertenece, sí a esa área.
MP: Pero él era todo lo que hacía, ¿no? Nada más a ver si estaban bien, no metía él su mano para nada de…
XX: No, no, no, uno era el que tenía que decir: “No, pos no tienen esto, o eso”. Entonces ya, entonces ya el patrón decía: “No pos les tengo… “Pos sí, pero que no sirve, que lo queremos mejor”. Y él iba cada tres meses.
MP: Y usted nunca se dio cuenta de algún caso así que le dijeran al cónsul, de no sé, algún, que el ranchero…
XX: Lo despidiera.
MP: Sí, o que pasara algún detalle, ¿no?
XX: Pos no, porque nunca se daba uno cuenta porque no entranos todos. Iba entrando cada ranchero con su gent[e], con los que llevaba. Y ahí estaba nada más el cónsul y el representante de La Asociación y el patrón. Y los que llevaba el patrón, eso era todo, y así iban entrando poco a poco.
MP: Y el cónsul sí les daba así como que la confianza para que hablaran con él. O sea, no eran un… como son ahora, ¿no?
XX: Sí.
MP: Así como que primero para hablar con el tienen que pasar por…
XX: No, no, él tenía toda la autoridad de… Y es del modo que, pos sí, a veces cosas que le faltaban a uno y que tenía obligación el ranchero de hacerlo, tenía que hacerlo, sí.
MP: ¿Cuánto pagaban ahí en el rancho?, ¿cuánto recibía usted de sueldo?
XX: ¿De sueldo?
MP: Sí
XX: Bueno, el contrato era por $0.50 centavos la hora. Pero precisamente cuando yo me cambié de un rancho al otro ranchero, ahí ya por ser tractorista nos pagaban $0.10 centavos más. Nos pagaban $0.60 centavos. Y el regador $0.50, pero al tractorista ya le pagaban $0.60.
MP: O sea que de todas maneras entre los especiales tenían varios…
XX: Pos sí.
MP: Niveles.
XX: Como que el regador era menos categoría que el tractorista, algo así. Pero ahí nos pagaban a $0.60 centavos la hora.
MP: Y cuando andaba piscando, ¿cuánto le pagaban?
XX: Eh, pos nomás un año pisqué, nos pagaban a $2.50 cien libras, así que necesitaba para hacer dinero, necesitaba piscar trescientas libras, pa que hiciera $6 dólares. (risas) Y trescientas libras son muchas.
MP: Sí, es muy poquito lo que pagaban.
XX: Muy poco.
MP: Y es muy difícil el trabajo ese, ¿no?, de piscar algodón.
XX: Sí pues desde luego, todo lo que los dedos se ampollan, se le tiene uno que hacer taped todo alrededor de los dedos para…Y ya para los [19]56, ya empezaron a salir las máquinas, las piscadoras, entonces ya jue cuando ya la gente ya también… ya no era tanta la gente que entraba a piscar.
MP: Pero los especiales sí seguían, ¿verdad?
XX: Sí porque nos dejaban precisamente pa las máquinas. Pa las máquinas seguía uno, y los regadores pa regadores también. Quiere decir que pa la gente pa piscar entonces sí ya entraba menos, porque no estoy seguro, pero los años [19]52, [19]53 todos esos años entraban de, sí, de ochenta a cien mil nomás al condado de Pecos.
MP: ¡Ah caray! Pues era muy grande.
XX: Muy grande y al mismo tiempo La Asociación mandaba braceros hasta Presidio. Presidio, Marfa, Alpine, ocupaban mucho bracero para ranchos ganaderos. En este otro, Fort Davis, igual también. Ahí lo que Valmo Rey, Zaragoza, todo eso. Así es que por eso entraba mucho, mucha gente a piscar a la, allá a Pecos. Porque pos era mucho onde repartían la gente también y como le digo, porque ya después como en el [19]52 en adelante empezaron a abrir muchos ranchos nuevos, ahí mismo los rancheros de Pecos.
MP: Y ahí en el rancho donde estuvo usted, donde, cuando contrataban así ya más, a más piscadores, ¿cómo le hacían ahí para tener el control de tanta gente? Porque me imagino que era mucha.
XX: Pos la gente se controla sola. Pos sí ya saben de que pos onde, onde anda uno y todo, pos se tiene que controlar. Que de cualquier modo había problemas pero no, no graves. No que tuvieran polecía y eso no, no. Como ahí en el rancho onde estaba, ya era, ahí metía uno, eran cinco básculas, eran quinientos los que entraban al rancho ese. Y no, nunca había problemas. Nunca hubo necesidad de policía, ni nada.
MP: Y tampoco La Migra, ¿no les iba a dar vueltas ahí seguido?
XX: No, no. No, tampoco porque pos ya sabían.
MP: Cuénteme, ahorita me decía que se iban al pueblo a los restaurantes y ahí se juntaban, ¿qué era lo que hacían para distraerse ustedes?, o de fines de semana, ¿qué era lo que acostumbraban?
XX: Pos no es que fuéranos cada fin de semana, por ejemplo, a nosotros nos pagaban por quincena. Íbanos a sacar nuestra comida por quince días allá al pueblo, y ya a irse a cenar al restaurant o a la cantina una cerveza y pa atrás otra vez. Y luego además, en el último rancho que estuvimos nosotros nos tenían hasta camionetas pa, como era el rancho muy grande, ahí en el rancho había tres pick up. Había una pa que el que se entendía con los regadores andarles cambiando los riegos, otra pal que chequeaba los motores de los pozos y otra pa lo que se ofrecía para ahí pa los tractores o algo, todas con su radio teléfono. Nomás que en ese tiempo no eran como las de ahorita. En ese tiempo era una, muy distintos los radios que traían las trocas pues que eran diferentes a… cargaban una batería casi del tamaño del asiento, atrás, y ésa era la que movía todo. Y ahí, bueno, con el señor ése, todas las trocas traían, como era compañía como quien dice.
MP: Y ahí con el ranchero, ustedes este, ¿el ranchero sabía hablar español?, o, ¿cómo se comunicaban?
XX: Sí, hablaban español todos, todos hablaban español. Que al último con el que estuve yo, al patrón, patrón, yo no, casi ni lo conocí. Conocí a los hermanos que eran los que se entendían con, con los ranchos. Pero él tenía oficinas acá en el pueblo, acá estaba más bien su negocio.
MP: Y por ejemplo, en los días festivos o sus cumpleaños, ¿se los festejaban?, o, ¿cómo lo pasaban?
XX: Igual.
MP: Navidad.
XX: No, no, pos ahí no había, pos digamos como Christmas, nos daban dos días pa que fuéramos al pueblo y eso. Pero de regalos no, pos pa regalarle a tantos estaba trabajoso.
MP: No, pero cuando menos, no sé, decir, que les organizaban una posada o algo.
XX: Ah, ¡no! No casi no, ahí se pasaban los cumpleaños igual que todos los días y se acostumbra a uno a, cómo le digo yo, pos no extrañé el campo porque pos me crié en el campo, así que pa mí…
MP: Y, ¿qué le dijeron sus papás cuando usted decidió venirse para acá?
XX: Pos que no la iba a hacer, que la canasta estaba muy alta aquí. Y luego que duré tanto le decía a mi papá: “¿Quihubo?, ¿no que no?”. “Tuviste suerte”.
MP: ¿No le creía?
XX: No. No, pos es que mi papá tenía terrenos donde sembraba y todo eso y pos ahí me la navegaba yo, por eso, pos dijo: “No te vas por necesidad, te vas porque quieres. Pero allá va a estar trabajoso, aquí nomás te hablan a almorzar y te sientas. Allá vas a tener que trabajar pa conseguir”. “Bueno”, dije. “Mira, mira”. Y ahí está que duré ocho años.
MP: Pues mucho tiempo.
XX: Sí, bastante.
MP: Bastante.
XX: Pues fue más bien lo que duraron los braceros. Como le digo, yo los braceros se vino acabando todo eso por las máquinas, empezaron a salir máquinas piscadoras y todo eso y pos ya, ya no llevaron gente. Y la gente la querían digamos ya pa, si pa la primer pisca no costeaba porque apenas estaba dando una brotada el algodón y la última pisca tampoco porque ya no había. Pero se daban tres piscas y luego ya después el pule, pero el pule, pos ya no había nada, pos ya estaba la mata sola. Pos ya le habían dado tres piscas. Así es que los piscadores, piscadores que entraban a las piscas, digamos como los de allá de, de Torreón, muchos de Chihuahua también donde hay algodón, entraban nomás a lo que, nomás a la segunda pisca, la tercer pisca ya no les costeaba.
MP: O sea, ¿dejaban ahí la matita?
XX: No, es que la primer pisca es el algodón, nada más la primer flor que está abajo. Pero la segunda pisca entonces sí, ya está la mata llena, ya brotó todo. Y ya a la tercer pisca ya esa es la flor que como quien dice está arriba, que salió arriba, entonces ya es muy poca. Por eso los picadores, piscadores iban nomás a la segunda pisca, daban la segunda pisca y mejor se venían, ya no les costeaba.
MP: Ni el trabajo, ¿no?, de estar ahí.
XX: No, no y para ellos pos no, como le digo, un piscador, un buen piscador, había piscadores de quinientas libras, entonces ya ganaban casi los $11 dólares, en ese tiempo era mucho. Pos así es que con un mes que le tocara buena pisca, con eso ya mejor se venían. Porque ya después ya de que para el fin de comer, ya necesitaban poner de la bolsa, que sacarlo del algodón.
MP: Por ejemplo ahorita de rendir el dinero, lo que a usted le pagaban, ¿sí le rendía?
XX: Sí, sí.
MP: ¿Bastante?
XX: Sí, sí me rendía. Porque yo cuando entré, el dólar todavía estaba a $8.60 pesos mexicanos por $1 dólar. Luego después, estuvo a $12, $12.50 me parece. Pero todavía costeaba, costeaba en la forma de que allá también era más barato. Así es que por ejemplo, una casa que ahorita cuesta $100,000 o $200,000 pesos, en ese tiempo le costaba $15,000. Y esos $15,000 de aquí los sacaba fácil, entonces por eso costeaba. Mucha gente, pos sí mucha gente sí, sí se acomodaba con ese sueldo. Pero sí, sí costeaba el sueldo.
MP: Aunque era así muy, pues sí tenía que pasar muchos detalles, ¿no? De que no estaba en su casa, gente extraña, pero compensaba.
XX: Pos eso, pero yo estoy hablando de mi persona porque yo era soltero. Pero ya por ejemplo el que tenía familia e hijos y todo, pos ya se ponía más, más trabajoso.
MP: Más difícil, ¿no?
XX: Sí, como muchos que eran regadores o tractoristas que tenían familia, entonces ahí tenían que acomodarse con los permisos. Al regador se le daba el permiso en diciembre. Se le podía dar permiso hasta un mes, mes y medio, pero ya tenía que estar de regreso en febrero. Pal… que es cuando empezaban los riegos. Y el tractorista era al revés, ese se lo daban en enero, febrero y tenía que regresar para abril o mayo, que ya empezaba uno a sembrar.
MP: Estaba muy bien organizado.
XX: Sí, sí se organizaba uno bien. Y ya la gente ya sabía. Igual que el regador, bueno, pues se le daba el permiso en diciembre, pero él sabía que en agosto, a fines de agosto podían darle otro. Porque ya pa en ese tiempo ya no regaba, ya estaban esperando que el algodón ya rindiera y todo pa empezar la pisca. La pisca empezaba todo el tiempo a fines de septiembre, era cuando empezaba a llegar la gente.
MP: Y, ¿usted no se dio cuenta de que se colara por ahí entre los braceros un que otro mojado?
XX: No, porque traían listas. Bueno en, posible en, ya acá en Pecos, en las piscas posible, sí. Pero digamos acá en las contrataciones y todo eso, no. Porque allá nos traían a Río Vista, ahí traían corridos por listas. Por los nombres y las listas y ahí va, y va y unos a una parte y otros a otro, porque pos ora según me doy cuenta yo, es como high school ahí, aquí pasando Moon City. Era lo que era de Río Vista. Así se llama precisamente la calle también, se llama Río Vista, pasando Moon City.
MP: Sí, de hecho fuimos a conocer ahí en Río Vista.
XX: Pues ésa es la que se, bueno pa mí que esa escuela que es high school ahí eran, en donde…
MP: Parte del terreno de Río Vista.
XX: Sí, porque eran muchos los cuartos. Porque muchas veces ahí durábanos hasta una noche. Hasta que no controlaban ya, revisaban bien toda la gente y todos empezaron a llamar así, a asociaciones como de Nuevo México como de acá de Pecos. O que casi más bien eran todas de Nuevo México, lo que era Doña Ana, condado de Luna, todos los condados esos. Y acá posible también pero yo le digo, Pecos era el que, como quien dice el que controlaba la gente ahí en toda La Asociación.
MP: ¿A usted nunca le dio por irse de mojado ya cuando se acabo el Programa Bracero?
XX: No, no, porque empecé a arreglar y ya no me convenía, entonces hasta que arreglé, entonces sí ya. Me tocó arreglar el [19]62 y en lugar de ganar pa acá, me quise irme a Pecos y el inmigrante no me dejó, porque las cartas eran de California, las tenía que llevar a California. Y ahí duré dieciséis años.
MP: ¡Ah, caray! Bastante.
XX: Bastante y allá sí iba y venía pos cada nueve o diez meses, porque como ya estaba casado, la familia estaba aquí.
MP: Y entonces ahí ya también, ¿ya fue cuando le arregló a su familia?
XX: No, pues la señora alcanzó ciudadanía por mis suegros y ya los muchachos ya nacieron aquí. Y luego duré del [19]62 hasta el [19]78 en California.
MP: ¡Bastante!
XX: ¡Bastante!
MP: Y a usted, ¿nunca le incomodó que le dijeran bracero?, o sea, ¿nunca le incomodó a usted eso?
XX: No, porque ahí depende cómo agarre la palabra. Además yo nunca vi que hubiera discriminación pa, pos sí, pa un bracero no, en ninguna parte. Pues, si el bracero era el negocio, cómo lo discriminaban. En un restaurant, una cantina, en una tienda, el bracero era el que gastaba el dinero. Luego luego las tiendas empezaron a, muchas tiendas hacían la propaganda que iban a recogerle la lista de lo que necesitaba hasta al rancho. Usted dejaba la lista allí, la tienda mandaba la troca e iba y recogía las listas. En la tarde que regresaba de trabajar ya estaba ahí su mandado. Era del modo que se hacían competencia, mayormente los que estábanos retirados del pueblo.
MP: Y a ustedes claro que les convenía, ¿no?
XX: Sí, claro que nos convenía y no, no, yo discriminación nunca vi, en ninguna parte.
MP: Porque también más o menos el tiempo en el que estuvo usted, hubo el problema con la gente de color, ya ve que los discriminaban mucho.
XX: Pero ahí no había. Ahí no había gente de color, puro americano y además el americano no le convenía porque, casi los que tenían los puestos ahí de mayordomos todo esos eran americanos, mexicanos casi no, no. No sé por qué, sería que administraban mejor la gente, o sabe. Pero ahí con los, onde estábanos nosotros, el hermano que se le seguía al que era el patrón, ése era mayordomo general. Y el que estaba de mayordomo ahí con nosotros era un hermano más chico de ellos. Y en otro rancho así también tenían gabachos. Al mismo tiempo, de la misma gente tenían gente que se dedicaba nomás a apuntar el tiempo del que trabajaba, a qué hora salía, qué hora entraba y todo eso.
MP: Entonces, para usted el programa, ¿sí estuvo bien? O sea ese tiempo de braceros sí estuvo bien, ¿no le faltó algo? No sé, más lugares a dónde ir.
XX: Sí. No, no y luego como le digo, tuvimos la suerte, porque todo el que iba a piscar nomás trabajaba tres meses, que era octubre, noviembre y diciembre y ya, se acababa el contrato. Entonces nosotros no, pos íbanos de frente, por eso nos costió. Porque ya nos agarraron de especiales y ahí como quien dice lo tenían a uno apapachado.
MP: Qué bueno, ¿no? porque sí era mucho el trabajo que ustedes hacían.
XX: Sí, sí pos sí, digamos, no por algo nos tenían, nos tenían por algo, les convenía también a ellos.
MP: Muy interesante, este, ya para terminar la entrevista quisiera que me platicara alguna otra experiencia, o así algo ya muy general, su punto de vista acerca de todo lo que fue la braceriada.
XX: No, pos ahí de los puntos de vista como dice el dicho: “El que le fue mal en la fiesta, pos fue por algo, ¿no?”. Porque sí hubo hasta muertos y por accidentes que se mataron y todo eso, pero fuera de ahí, no. Picados de víboras porque de esas sí había muchas.
MP: Ah, sí, eso me dijeron que había muchas ahí en Pecos.
XX: Y como eran ranchos que había nuevos, estaba pior. Nosotros una vez andábanos tras un conejo y por agarrar el conejo estaba la víbora adentro y dejamos a alguien cuidándola ahí pero yo creo la víbora se lo tragó, ya no salió el conejo, nomás salió la víbora. No, las víboras hay donde quiera, tenía que andar con cuidado. Había una parte allí, allí fui a trabajar yo nomás, un, como unos cuatro o cinco meses, en Mc Cameg, ahí es pura víbora ahí.
MP: Y, ¿cómo le hacían?, ¿tenían machetes ahí para matarlas?, o, ¿cómo?
XX: No, no es que la víbora por el mismo movimiento y todo eso se, se aleja, se va. Como todos esos ranchos que abrieron nuevos, pos era ahí, era puro desierto puro, pura víbora.
MP: Y eran de cascabel, ¿no?
XX: De cascabel, sí, pura de cascabel.
MP: Cuando menos ellas le avisan, de que ahí está y de que no le vaya a pisar, si no, lo muerde.
XX: Sí, es lo primero que hacen. No, pues sí había en el rancho. A uno le picó en un pie dándole crank a un tractor. El tractor se ponchó y se quedó en el, en el field. Otro día que fuimos por el tractor, la víbora estaba enroscada en la rueda de enfrente, éste se arrimó a darle crank y fue cuando le picó. No, pero como le digo, teníamos mucha atención.
MP: Y de esas personas que usted se dio cuenta de que los mordió o algo, o de que algunos que fallecieron, ¿qué hacía el ranchero?
XX: No pos él, él como ese que le picó ahí la víbora inmediatamente a la troca y vámonos al hospital. No hay con qué, no cualquier accidente, lo atendían luego luego. Fuera dentista, fuera lo que fuera, ellos en la aseguranza cubría todo. La aseguranza cubría todo. Por eso los rancheros, al primer ranchero que le dije: “No”, le dije, “pos me pagan muy poco”. Me dijo: “No sabes lo que estoy pagando por ti. Y tú crees que es poco lo que te estoy pagando”. Pos sí, aseguranza y todo eso que les exigían y luego pa tantos.
MP: Pues también, pero qué bueno.
XX: Ah no, pero de todos modos era, a ellos les convenía. También rancheros ahí que pos se hicieron ricos con las braceriadas. Las tiendas, restaurantes, hasta tiendas de cadenas como la J.C. Penney y todo eso.
MP: Sí, pues de hecho toda esa área prosperó por eso, ¿no?
XX: Sí.
MP: Y de hecho también Estados Unidos por eso elevó.
XX: Por eso progresó.
MP: Si no, con las guerras y todo esto se hubiera ido para abajo, ¿no?
XX: No pues aquí esto, eran puros fields, fíjese. Ysleta cuando iba yo con permiso, el bus duraba de Ysleta a El Paso caminando como cuatro o cinco millas que no había nada. Cuando una vez me tocó venirme porque se vino la gente un día antes que yo pa acá para Río Vista, que más bien aquí a Waterfill, que era onde nos iban a dar el otro contrato, yo llegué un día después. Entonces pa pronto el ranchero me llevó a La Asociación y ahí me dieron una carta. Y ya el ranchero me llevó al Greyhound a agarrar el bus, dijo: “Y toma, ahí agarras un carro de sitio que te lleve a Río Vista, ahí presentas la carta”. Y dije: “sí”. Por eso me di cuenta que todo eso no había nada. El carro, me imagino yo, que agarró la Zaragoza y luego la North Loop, y luego como salimos de Ysleta, donde paraban los buses de la Greyhound, porque entonces, ¿pos cuál freeway? El freeway era la Carretera la 80, la Alameda. Allá entraba uno por la Paisano, dejaba la Paisano, agarraba la Alameda y era Alameda hasta, pos Fabens. Y de ahí para allá el 80. El freeway pos ya después lo hicieron como en el [19]64 o [19]66 por ahí, [19]67, pero ese era el tráfico que había.
MP: Bueno, pues este, no se si tenga otra cosa que agregar a la entrevista.
XX: No, algo que quiera preguntar más, pos ya lleva mucho material y no, ya le digo nomás el nombre no me lo diga, pa qué.
MP: Bueno.
XX: Un anónimo.

Biographical Synopsis of Interviewee: Senor XX was born in Jerez, Zacatecas, México, in 1930; he received a formal education through middle school; in 1951, the bracero program was very popular in his home state of Zacatecas, which is why, at the age of twenty, he decided to become a bracero; he worked in the program for eight years in Pecos, Texas.
Summary of Interview: Senor XX was hired as a bracero at a recruiting center in Zacatecas, México; he recalls that there were also other recruitment centers in the states of Sonora, Chihuahua, and Aguascalientes in México; there were two types of braceros, specialized and common; the specialized braceros were hired for eighteen months and received higher salaries; the common braceros were hired for only three months at a time; he worked as a specialized bracero weighing cotton; his job was to make sure that the cotton was not mixed with rocks, wood, or any other objects that would make the cotton weigh more; because the braceros were paid per pound of cotton that they picked, this was a major concern; he also recalls that in order for grocery stores to gain and keep braceros as clients, they would go out to the farms to pick up grocery lists; the groceries would then be delivered to the braceros.
