Reyes Subject The topic of the resource daughter of a bracero Description An account of the resource Biographical Synopsis of Interviewee: María Soledad Reyes was born July 26, 1955, in Pajacuarán, Michoacán, México; her mother was a housewife, and her father worked in agriculture, sowing beans, corn and wheat; he came to the United States for a brief time, and he worked without proper documentation; later, when María was still a baby, he enlisted in the bracero program; after his time with the program, the family moved to Los Mochis, Sinaloa, México; María eventually married and immigrated to the United States; she and her husband settled in Arizona to raise their family. Aquí está Matt García también, que va a hacer preguntas. ML: La primera pregunta va a ser algo general. ¿Dónde nació, María Serrano? MS: En Tecolotlán, Jalisco. ML: Y, ¿cuándo? MS: Enero 4 de 1930. ML: Y, ¿cuándo es que escuchó por primera vez del programa de los braceros?, ¿fue allá en México? MS: Bueno, mi esposo es bracero. Mi esposo vino de dieciocho años, aunque él se puso veintiuno. Vino cuando la Segunda Guerra Mundial. En 1944 fue su primera vez que vino a Estados Unidos como bracero. A él gracias a Dios le tocó la suerte de que en ese tiempo estaba, estaba el Presidente Ale… MC: ¿Alemán? MS: No, no era Alemán, era Ávila Camacho. MC: Tal vez era Ávila Camacho. MS: Se me hace que era Ávila Camacho, no estoy muy segura. Ellos tuvieron la grande oportunidad de que los trajeran de México en un tren especial. Gracias a ese presidente, que se supo traer su gente con… MC: Con dignidad. MS: Con dignidad, exactamente. MC: Valoró su gente. MS: Valoró su gente, con dignidad. A él le tocó venir, pues se, de la primera vez que se enroló como bracero, fue a la capital de México, de allá los trajeron directamente. Después vino en el [19]50, 1950 y luego en el [19]52 nuevamente. Ya cuando… La primera vez vino al traque. Lo trajeron al riel, a la vía del tren y ya después vino a diferentes trabajos en el campo. Eso fue la primera vez que yo escuché de los braceros. ML: Y, ¿cómo era su vida cuando su esposo se venía a los Estados Unidos? MS: Muy triste, yo tenía mis… La primera en el [19]44 no era mi esposo aún todavía. Yo lo conocí después de que regresó de Estados Unidos. Me casé en el [19]47, tengo una hija del [19]49, mi primer hija. Cuando vino en el [19]50 pues mi niña estaba chiquita y pues fue triste, ¿verdad? Porque mi muchachita pues tuvo que estar criada sin padre prácticamente, ¿verdad? Y ya regresó cuando ya mi niña ya estaba grandecita, ya tenía dos años cuando él regreso. ML: Y, ¿dónde vivía cuando se venía él? MS: En Guadalajara. ML: En Guadalajara. ¿Vivía sola con su hija o vivía con…? MS: No, mi suegra vivía conmigo, la mamá de él; ella vivía con nosotros. ML: Y, ¿le comentaban cosas sus parientes? Su madre y su papá o sus hermanos sobre su esposo, porque se venía como bracero. MS: A mi mamá no le gustaba que me dejara sola. Mi suegra lloraba mucho también y pues lamentábamos la, pues que él no estaba con nosotros, eso era lo que… Pues estábamos como quien dice prácticamente recién casados y yo sola, así es de que era una, una cosa pos muy mala. Después ya tuve más hijos, cuando se vino en el [19]52, yo ya tenía dos, dos hijos. Una que nació en el [19]49 y otra que nació en el [19]52. ML: Y, ¿su esposo le mandaba dinero? MS: Sí, claro. ML: ¿Seguido o cuando estaba trabajando? MS: Cuando él podía, cuando él podía porque nunca fue que nos estuviera mandando, digamos cada semana. Desgraciadamente cuando los hombres están aquí solos, pos le dan vuelo a la hilacha, hablando este vulgarmente y pos la familia allá que se quede, qué nos interesa. Eso es lo más triste que puede uno, porque anda uno que no tiene… Pos no sabe ni qué hago y que ni modo que mi suegra. Mi suegra no trabajaba, mi suegra ella era una persona ya grande, no… ¿A quién? Mi mamá no estaba tampoco, mi mamá estaba lejos de conmigo. Mi papá pos tampoco ya no tenía, no tengo hermanos, así que era sola. Mi hija, mi suegra y yo, nada más los tres. Una cosa muy triste porque pues extraña uno su, la presencia sobre todo de el padre que tiene que estar al, al…Cerca de los hijos, ¿verdad?, y de uno, de mujer, pues estaba jovencita yo; en ese tiempo estaba muy jovencita. ML: Y, ¿cómo se comunicaban? MS: Él me escribía cartas y a veces ni me escribía. A veces nomás me echaba un money order. MC: Se le olvidaba hasta escribir. MS: Un money order en un sobre y: “Estoy bien”. Y punto. No, no escribía nada más, era todo. MC: No había comunicación. MS: No había. No había comunicación. ML: Y, ¿iba él y regresaba a México? MS: Sí, sí regresó en el, pues vamos diciendo en el cin[cuenta], ¿qué sería?, [19]51, casi [19]52. Me dejó embaraza de la segunda y se volvió a venir. Regresaba y se regresaba otra vez. En las segundas veces, las dos últimas veces que se vino él me platicaba que fue una, una algo, ya no, diferente como la primera vez, ¿verdad? La primera vez lo trajeron dignamente, las otras dos veces tuvieron que venir aquí a, ¿cómo se llama? MC: No se viene. MS: A sonora. MC: A Hermosillo, Sonora. MS: A Hermosillo, Sonora. MC: Es donde los contrataban. MS: Ahí este, tuvo que dormir algunas veces pos en donde podía, en el suelo, donde podía. MC: No algunas veces señora, había sido siempre. MS: Van todo el tiempo. MC: Su cama era un cartón nomás. MS: Sí. ML: Y cuando vino a los Estados Unidos, dijo usted, la primera vez trabajó en el traque y luego trabajó en… Y, ¿dónde en el traque?, ¿en qué ciudad? MS: En la, en este, ¿cómo se llama? Donde hace mucho frío en, en… MC: En Idaho. MS: En Alaska. MC: En Alaska. MS: En Alaska o en, por ahí en… No estoy muy segura, eh, pero por ahí, por ahí por ese rumbo. MC: Alaska está muy lejos, señora María. MS: Pos en, ¿cómo se llama donde se llevan a las personas que, que pescan? MC: Alaska. MS: Por eso que pienso que sí por ahí en uno de esos. No estoy muy segura, él es el que sabe. Exactamente no sabría, pero sí por un, por ahí por uno de esos rumbos. ML: Y, ¿luego trabajó él en la agricultura? MS: Después en el [19]50 trabajó en la agricultura. Vino, estuvo pues en varios lugares, ¿verdad? Estuvo en, aquí en El Centro, en Caléxico, me parece que en Salinas también, en la lechuga. ML: Y, ¿en México usted conocía muchas mujeres que tenían esposos que estaban aquí como braceros? MS: No. ML: No. ¿En su comunidad no había muchos? MS: No. Sabía que había, pero que yo conociera, no. ML: No. MS: Como es una ciudad grande, Guadalajara, ¿verdad? Entonces yo no tenía mucho, mucha relación con mucha gente y de las personas que yo conocía, no. Yo era la única. ML: María Carmona, ¿dónde nació usted? MC: Yo nací en un ranchito a un lado de Zapopan, Jalisco, que se llama Ranchito del Cuetero, pero desde chiquita me llevaron a Tepatitlán, Jalisco y de ahí fue donde yo me vine para acá. Así que toda mi juventud como quien dice ahí la pasé, en la… Bueno, yo cuando emigré yo tenía ya más de dieciocho años ya, sí. ML: ¿En que año nació? MC: En el [19]45. ML: ¿En el [19]45? MC: Sí. ML: Y, ¿cuándo fue la primera vez que usted escuchó algo sobre el programa de los braceros? MC: Desde que yo tuve uso de razón, porque siempre estuvimos solos. Siempre nos sentábamos, hasta me dan ganas de llorar de acordarme que mi mamá se sentaba afuera en la banqueta, en la puerta de la casa a mirar las estrellas y decíamos: “¿Mamá dónde está mi papá?”. Todos, todos los hermanitos. Decía mi mamá: “En el norte”. “Y, ¿pa dónde está el norte?”. “Pos para allá”. Nos señalaba el lugar. Y todos nos quedábamos mirando, esperando: “¿Cuándo vendrá mi papá?”. Porque mi mamá siempre nos crío sola y siempre yo añoro la presencia del padre, porque nunca lo tuvimos. Él nomás iba cada que se le cumplía el contrato, cada dos años y le hacía un hijo a mi mamá y se venía. Yo era la mayor, yo era la más grande y mi apá, mi amá pues desgraciadamente ella fue huérfana. Ella no tuvo escuela, así que en cuanto yo pude escribir, yo era la que le hacía las cartas pa mi apá. Yo era la que, era como la mano derecha de mi mamá, chiquita. De siete años, de cuando yo me acuerdo que a los cuatro años me dio el sarampión, estuve muy mala, me iba a morir. Me hinché toda y el doctor le dijo a mi mamá, dijo: “Avísele a su esposo”, dice, “que tal vez la niña tenga que morirse”. Y yo, yo oí. Y entonces ahora yo me siento que, que entonces ya comprendía yo, ¿verdad? Y decía yo: “Yo no me quiero morir, yo no me quiero morir”. Me acuerdo que mi mamá lloraba y le decía mi a mi apá: “No te vayas, mira porque la niña se va, se está muriendo”. Y dice mi apá: “Pues me tengo que ir a contratar”. O sea que era más importante el trabajo, venir a trabajar acá, porque en México pagaban una miseria, que la vida de un hijo. Decía mi mamá: “Y, ¿cómo le voy a ser si mi hija se muere?”. Decía mi papá: “Pues la entierras”. Y yo, se me grabó todo eso, que nunca tuvimos a mi papá ni pa una cumpleaños, una piñata, no supimos nada de eso. Nosotros un regalito, tampoco. Que mi papá se venía y él, hasta que se le cumplía el contrato, nada más llegaba y le hacía un hijo a mi mamá y se venía otra vez. Y yo tomaba, tomé como quien dice la responsabilidad casi como de ser mamá y papá ahí también. Porque desde chiquita tuvimos que este, ayudarle a mi mamá a bordar a mano, a coser para poder comprar comida, porque mi papá sí mandaba, pero lo que le sobraba. Porque él acá tenía su mamá, acá en Mexicali, parientes a los que iba y visitaba y nosotros éramos lo que sobraba. Cuando ya teníamos yo dieciocho años, mi apá se acordó que tenía hijos, pero porque ya estábamos grandes, ya podíamos trabajar. Entonces fue cuando vino, fue por nosotros y cuando llegamos aquí, pues gran fue la desilusión que ya… Decían Estados Unidos, Estados Unidos que, el sueño americano, ¿cuál sueño americano? Es una pesadilla porque en México yo este, mi amá, como ella no tuvo escuela, ¿verdad? Ella procuró que fuéramos a la escuela, me puso en un colegio de monjas para que yo le ayudara a hacer cartas y todo, ¿no? Y este, y las monjitas como miraban pos que yo tenía necesidad, ellas mismas me dieron un puesto en el colegio para que yo les ayudara como maestra cuando… Tenía quince años y yo ya estaba dando clases a niños que no tenían con qué pagar el colegio. Porque hay munchos niños que no pueden pagar una colegiatura y había dos turnos, uno en la mañana y otro en la tarde y yo era la maestra de las de la tarde. Yo tenía hasta cincuenta y seis niñas, llegue a tener hasta setenta niñas, así era la necesidad de la educación de gente que no tenía, que no podía pagar. Y sin embargo tenía yo que ser responsable de ese grupo a los quince años. Y este, y cuando mi apá ya este nos trajo. ML: A ver un segundito. Disculpe. Y, ¿usted durante este tiempo conocía otros niños en las mismas situaciones? MC: Sí, sí había muchos también que se venían. Yo me acuerdo que cuando había en las tardes, ¿verdad?, cuando llegaban los papás del trabajo, de algunos niños iban encontraban a su papá y pasaban de la mano con el papá. “Lero, lero”, nos hacían, ¿verdad? “Yo tengo papá y ustedes no tienen papá”. Y nosotros nos sentíamos mal, porque la gente, desgraciadamente los niños son, son crueles a veces, ¿verdad? O es como un huérfano, que no tiene papá, no tiene mamá. Volteábamos y mirábamos, pues nosotros no tenemos papá, pues mi papá no está aquí. Había muchos niños, había muchas mujeres que sus esposos ya no volvieron. Tal vez se quedaron en el desierto, tal vez se quedaron acá con otra familia y muchos hijos se quedaron solos luchando junto con la mamá. ML: Y, ¿nunca escuchaban algo sobre su papá esos niños? MC: Muchos se vinieron, se vinieron a buscar a los papás, se venían a… Ilegales, cruzando el desierto, buscando a sus padres, pero no volvían. ML: ¿Así chicos? MC: Sí chicos, chicos. Tuve un sobri[no], no, un primo, que se vino y nunca jamás volvió. Tal vez se quedó en el desierto, ya no, no supimos nada de él. Quién sabe qué pasaría con él. ML: Y, ¿cómo era la relación entre sus hermanos y su papá cuando regresaba su papá? MC: Pues te voy a decir que ya después cuando fue pasando el tiempo nos fuimos acostumbrando a que ese papá era como una visita. Que nomás iba cada dos años y nomás duraba dos semanas y se venía. Ya estábamos acostumbrados a vivir solos, porque estaba mi abuelito, el papá de mi mamá, él duró con nosotros bastantes años. Pa nosotros él era nuestro papá, porque cuando inclusive fue una vez mi papá, ya José mi hermano, usted lo conoce doña María, ya tenía dos años y no quería que él, el hermanito mío se acostara mi apá con mi amá. Lo agarraba a patadas. ¿Por qué? Y decía mi apá: “¿Por qué no le dices que tiene papá?”. Y dice mi mamá: “Y, ¿pues quién tiene la culpa? Pues si tú no estas aquí”. Y esa relación de entre hijos y padre fue muy, muy fría, ¿por qué? Porque no hubo ese cariño, ese amor del padre para los hijos ni de los hijos para el padre, porque no lo mirábamos. No lo mirábamos, nomás estábamos todo el tiempo esperando a ver si llegaba el cartero con el dinero. Y mi apá también desgraciadamente pues nos mandaba también lo que le sobraba. ML: ¿Usted veía a otros niños con mejor relación con sus padres que eran braceros? MC: Pues no, no sé decirte de eso, ¿verdad? De si tenían mejor relación o no, pero tal vez sí porque mi apá como te digo, él tenía acá más familia, tenía a mi abuelita y sobrinos y todo y él acá se pasaba el tiempo con la familia de él y nosotros allá estábamos solos. ML: Y, ¿usted estaba dando cursos desde los quince años? MC: Sí, yo tenía segundo grado de primaria. Seis años duré, desde los trece años que salí de la primaria hasta los dieciocho que me vine comencé a ayudarle a la monjita. Ya después me dejaron a mí sola con el grupo. Yo era la maestra de lectura, la maestra de catecismo y la maestra de costura. Y ya después yo era maestra de todo, yo tenía el grupo sola, a mi responsabilidad. ML: ¿Luego se vino a los dieciocho? MC: Sí, después de los dieciocho años. ML: ¿Por qué? MC: Porque fue y me trajo, mi papá me trajo, nos trajo a toda la familia, a todos nos emigró porque él duró desde que empezaban las contrataciones, ¿verdad? Hasta ya cuando ya se acabó el Programa Bracero, los mismos patrones, como era muy buen trabajador, le dieron a él la green card, o sea la mica, ¿verdad? Y ya cuando él estuvo trabajando ahí ya establecido en un solo lugar, entonces nos trajo a nosotros. ML: Y, ¿qué hizo cuando llegó?, ¿trabajó? MC: Lloré, lloré como una coyota. Me trajo a un rancho horrible, rodeado de puras palmas y coyotes, no se miraba nada, no había casa, no había gente, no había nada. Yo estaba acostumbrada a vivir en, y a tener relación con más personas, ¿verdad? En el colegio donde yo trabajaba, había más de mil quinientas alumnas. Imagínate de cambio tan drástico, porque me vine… Llegue aquí el 6 de enero, a la mitad como quien dice de año escolar. Estaba acostumbrada a movimiento, a las niñas a… Pues estaba yo contenta, yo era feliz en ese lugar y cuando me voy viniendo, ¿Dios mío pero qué es esto?, ¿esto es Estados Unidos? En un rancho, mi primer trabajo que hice fue amarrando los palos de las uvas. Porque era en, en enero, ¿verdad?, cuando podan la uva. Me daba unos varazos, toda rasguñada. Y luego después fui a, trabajé en el espárrago y este, y trabajábamos allí de una manera muy, muy, en malas condiciones, se puede decir. No había baño, no nos tenían agua para tomar. Yo en aquel entonces ignoraba todo el peligro que contenía el agua con que riegan los espárragos, que tiene pesticida, que tiene de todo, ¿verdad? Y pues de ahí teníamos que tomar y de un bote de soda, nomás le quitaban alrededor y era para todos. Si queríamos ir al baño las mujeres nos teníamos que cubrir unas con otras, porque no había baño. Y este, pues yo no estaba acostumbrada a trabajar tan duro, ¿verdad? ML: ¿Había muchas mujeres en el campo? MC: Sí, pues la mayoría eran casi puras mujeres en el espárrago, traíamos una navajita, no sé si ustedes conocen un palito con un cuchillito y le pica uno al espárrago y va uno echándoselos acá amarrado aquí a un bote y atrás se va poniendo uno el espárrago. MG: ¿En qué año y dónde? MC: En el [19]66, aquí en Cien Palmas, allí en el rancho de los Codicas. Ése era un rancho de palmas muy grandes, hasta ahorita ya están las palmas todas viejas, todas caídas, este… Y ahorita ya están construyendo ahí todo ese lugar, se está poniendo muy bonito, ¿verdad? Pero antes era pura palma, pura uva, también trabajé en la uva, deshaijé algodón, pisqué ocra, trabajé en el dátil. Yo le ayudaba a mi papá, mi apá era palmero, él se subía a las palmas, bajaba los bonches de los dátiles. Yo abajo recibía los bonches y los quitaba todos los dátiles y los sorteaba. Y este, y le juntaba todo el dátil, ¿verdad? Y ese era mi trabajo, sí. Y ya después pues ya fui consiguiendo otros trabajitos en los empaques y en eso, ¿verdad? Pero fue muy duro para mí, yo lloré mucho, mucho, mucho. Me había pesado mucho haberme venido, porque yo no estaba acostumbrada a esa vida. En México, en México tú vives una vida feliz, se puede decir. Ahí conoces a la gente, la gente te conoce, toda la gente se platica, si te encuentras una persona en la calle: “Buenos días, ¿cómo esta?”, pues aunque no te conozca. La gente es muy sociable, tenemos mucho, mucho de qué gozar en México, te voy a decir. Lo único que el, la mejor vida que se puede dar la gente, ayudándose con el dinero que va de aquí para allá, eso es lo que ha cambiado mucho México, ¿verdad? Que sí, que México ha progresado, yo en mi manera de ver y de pensar, por todos los braceros que vinieron, trabajaron, mandaron su dinero. Las mujeres o la familia se pudo mejorar, sí, porque desgraciadamente te voy a decir una cosa, yo lo que miré cuando mi padre era joven, que el Gobierno de México obligaba a los campesinos a ir a votar por el PRI [Partido Revolucionario Institucional]. “Tú no votas por el PRI, tú no tienes una cartilla de identificación, tú no puedes sembrar, tú no puedes agarrar agua, tú no puedes agarrar nada”. No había libertad pa nada. Y bajaban de los ranchos a la gente como si fueran animales. En trocas, las troques, así como, ¿verdad doña María?, que tienen a lo de, redilas, retacados de gente a votar por el PRI. “Y, ¿por qué por el PRI?”, le decía mi apá, “¿por qué por el PRI?, ¿porque si no no me dan cartilla? Pero, ¿Por qué? Si hay dos partidos, el PAN y el PRI, ¿ya no hay democracia?”. “Pos sí hay, pero aquí no hay”. Así que eso a mí me indignó, me indignó. Yo ya venía yo con coraje, ¿verdad?, por ver la injusticia. Llego aquí, voy a los campos, voy a los files [fields] y me encuentro con algo parecido, en los files, en la uva. Cuando comenzamos a saber de César Chávez, pues yo ya traía ese gusanito, ¿verdad? Porque mi abuelo fue revolucionario también. Él luchó, él fue este, Cristero, él luchó contra el Gobierno, él defendió la religión, él pues fue activista también en México. Pues seguramente traíamos eso ya la familia, ¿verdad? Mi hermana también, tengo una hermana que luchó mucho también en el sindicato y cuando comenzamos a mirar lo que estaba pasando en los files y supimos de César Chávez, pues también le entramos, ¿verdad? Y me acuerdo que cuando estábamos trabajando, trabajábamos con, ¿no se acuerda doña María cómo se llamaban los filipinos? ¡Ay!, no recuerdo el nombre de los filipinos. MG: ¿Sindicato de filipinos? MC: No, no, el sindicato entró en muchos ranchos, pero cuando se terminó el contrato, entonces nosotros teníamos, estábamos gozando de nuestro break, porque antes no había break. Tú no podías tener un agua limpia, tú no podías tener un baño, tú no podías tener un vasito pa tomar agua. Entonces todo eso se consiguió a base del esfuerzo de los campesinos. César Chávez sí fue un líder, pero si los campesinos no hubiéramos luchado, no nos hubiéramos puesto, ¿verdad?, los pantalones pa conseguir lo que, lo que se logró, muy líder César Chávez y muy bueno y todo, pero no se hubiera logrado lo que se logró sin la fuerza del campesino. Entonces, porque nosotros como quien dice teníamos sed de justicia. Teníamos hambre, hambre de derechos para los campesinos. Entonces fue cuando, cuando este ya, ya estábamos gozando de nuestro break, cuando dice el filipino, dice: “Oh”, dice, “están gozando de su break, pues gócenlo porque ya se les va a acabar”. Y sí, otro día en la mañana, tengo una hermana que es bien brava, tenía una este (ininteligible) amarilla y luego le colgamos la bandera de ésas de Chávez, ¿verdad? Y llegamos al rancho y ya, en la puerta ya había un guardia que no nos dejó entrar. Había un caballo pintado ahí que eran los teamsters ya estaban tomando posesión. Sí, entonces dice el guardia: “Pues no puedes entrar”. Dijo mi hermana: “¿Por qué no?”. Dijo: “Porque quítale esa garra que traes a la camioneta”. O sea la bandera de la unión. Dijo mi hermana: “¿Qué?”, dijo, “como muy mía mi camioneta, yo sabré lo que le cuelgo”. Y entonces nos hicieron la seña los del sindicato. “Cállense y métanse, quítale la bandera”. Pero es que ya estábamos planeando que a las 11 de la mañana, cuando era el break para comer, todos nos íbamos a ir en huelga”. MS: Eso fue en el [19]73. MC: Sí. ML: Y, ¿cuándo es que llegó usted a los Estados Unidos y cómo se involucró usted? MC: Pos ahí nos conocimos, ahí nos conocimos. MS: Yo entré a Estados Unidos en 1967. ML: ¿Por cuál razón? MS: Pos por lo mismo. Mis hijos ya estaban grandes, mi esposo ya… Bueno, en realidad por mi rebeldía. Porque mi esposo no me quería traer para acá, nunca me quiso traer, pero yo lo desafié y me vine para Tijuana. Ya tenía, la mayor de mis hijas tenía quince años y la otra tenía trece y pues de ahí para abajo, seis, seis hijos más. Eran seis y tengo siete hijos, la más chica nació aquí. Entonces él me había prohibido venir para acá. Yo tenía mi mamá en Tijuana y mi mamá me dijo: “Hija”, dice, “yo quiero irme para Guadalajara”. El esposo estaba, no era mi papá, era mi padrastro, el esposo estaba enfermo de, de artritis y el doctor le recomendó que se fuera a un lugar más calido. Entonces se fueron para Guadalajara. Me dijo: “Sí quieres venir para que estés más cerquitas de tu esposo”. Entonces dice, ya, ya él estaba emigrado, gracias a mi mamá, no porque ningún contratista, ningún ranchero lo emigró, sino que fue mi mamá la que le ayudó porque él después de que ya no vino contratado, él se venía ilegal. Varias veces lo sacaron de ilegal. Y ese tiempo fue el peor para mí, porque entonces ya menos me mandaba dinero, a veces nomás $5 dólares, $6 dólares, $7 dólares era mi… Y no cada semana, cada que, que se podía o que quería. Entonces yo, pues no hallaba qué hacer, yo cocía ajeno, yo andaba sirviendo, andaba ayudándole a una comadre que tenía un restaurantito. Ella me daba la comida que le sobraba para mis hijos. Andaba yo que a veces no tenía ni qué darles a mis hijos, seis hijos. Era una, una cosa muy tremenda, que no se la deseo a nadie. Como mujer sola allá y con tanto hijo. Como el papá de Cuca, iba y me iba me hacía otra criatura y otra vez se venía. Era, fue una vida muy… MC: Muy triste. MS: Muy pesada, muy pesada. Tanto para mí como mujer, como para mis hijos, sobre todo para mis hijos. En 1961 emigró él ya legalmente a Estados Unidos y en el [19]66 yo me vine para Tijuana. Yo llegué a Tijuana en septiembre, el primero de septiembre del [19]66. Él no fue, me castigó todavía porque me había venido por, por… MC: Sus calzones. MS: Mis calzones, (risas) hablando vulgarmente. MC: Pos sí, al cabo es la verdad. MS: Hablando vulgarmente, porque yo me había venido desafiándolo, este, y no fue a vernos. Me dijo: “Si tu madre no se va”, y ella lo había emigrado y él vivía con ella, antes de que se emigrara, “si tu madre no se va, no voy a volver para allá”. Así es que yo ya no hallaba ni qué hacer. ¿Le pido a Dios que mi mamá se vaya pronto pa que venga mi marido? No sabía yo que estaba en, ¿cómo dice? Entre la espada y la pared. MC: Y la pared. ML: Y, ¿por qué no quería que su madre estuviera ahí? MS: Por caprichos, por ideas porque le digo, él estaba con ella, ella le ayudó a emigrar, mi padrastro. Él le debía favores a mi mamá, era nomás un capricho, sabrá Dios qué tendría por acá escondido, ¿verdad? Eso sí no sé. Y por eso era, fue como un castigo, no encontró otra manera de presionarme, más que de esa manera me presionaba a mí. Así es de que yo no hallaba si pedirle a Dios que se fuera mi mamá pronto o hacerme el ánimo a que pos… Y cuando me vine, dije: “Bueno, de todas maneras estoy sola”. Porque él me había dicho: “Si tú un día te vienes sin mi consentimiento, has de cuenta que nunca nos hemos conocido”. Así es de que, él tenía cinco años de que no iba conmigo, ya, que ya no regresaba para México, me mandaba lo que quería y lo que podía. Entonces yo tenía mi hija la más chica tenía, pues no la más chica, la penúltima, pero la última que nació allá, este, cuando el emigró a… Fue, yo estaba embarazada, él emigró en febrero y… No, en febrero, no, no estoy segura del mes. Pero mi hija nació en septiembre y él fue, tenía mi hija cuarenta días cuando él fue. Se estuvo dos meses con nosotros y ya se vino y nunca más volvió. Ya mi niña ya tenía cinco años cuando, cuando yo me vine. Si no me vengo, no conoce a su padre. Me acuerdo que… ML: Y, ¿cómo se vino? MS: Como pude. Mi hija la mayor ya andaba noviando, la segunda también, estaba chica pero ya andaba noviando. Tengo un hijo que es el único hombre que tengo, es el tercero, pues andaba… Pos yo lo llevaba a la escuela, se me escapaba de la escuela. Lo llevaba hasta adentro del salón y se escapaba de ahí se iba con otros chamacos. No iba a hacer cosas malas, simplemente se iba con otros amigos, no le gustaba la, no le gustaba la escuela. Se iban al cerro al, al, pos sí, al cerro a los charcos a bañarse y andar matando lagartijos, andar matando pajaritos, andar haciendo vagancias de esas. No, no porque fuera él que anduviera en drogas, no nada de eso, no. Era, era, pues en México eran sus travesuras, vamos diciendo. Pero yo tenía mucho pendiente que un día se me fuera a ahogar en uno de esos charcos donde se estanca el agua. Ahí iban ellos y se bañaban, un montón de chamacos, no nomás mi hijo, ¿verdad? Y pues, todo eso a mí me tenía muy presionada, muy presionada con, ¿qué cuentas voy a dar o qué voy a hacer con mis hijos? Y luego eso, de que había veces que yo, amanecía que no tenía ni qué darles de comer, no tenía absolutamente nada. Agarraba un camino y me iba al, al pos al cerro, allá a cortar nopales a cortar quelites, a cortar verdolagas, a cortar lo que podía para darles de comer a mis hijos. Porque yo no tenía ni qué darles de comer, nada, nada. Y la pobre de mi suegra, pues no podía darme, estaba igual que nosotros. ML: ¿Fue cuando se decidió venirse? MS: Me decidí venir, mandé mis hijas adelante, después de que yo le pedía tanto a Dios: “Padre mío, tú me tienes que ayudar, si va a hacer un bien para mis hijos, ayúdame, dame la oportunidad de irme. Si mis hijos van a fracasar… Yo pensaba en mis hijos, ya no pensaba en mí. “Mejor ponme todos los obstáculos que puedas, pero, pero aquí déjame”. Él después de añales que no, que él me mandaba $5 dólares, $6 dólares, $7 dólares, $10, $12 fue lo máximo que me mandó, me mandó $40 dólares. “No”, dije, “pues ya la hice”. Yo tenía una máquina de cocer, una máquina Singer de pedal que mi mamá me había regalado, que con eso yo hacía vestidos, hacía lo que podía, ¿verdad? Y vendí mi máquina y con eso mandé a mi suegra y a mis dos hijas mayores con mi mamá para acá para Guada[lajara], para Tijuana. Y ya, ellas se vinieron en junio y yo me vine hasta septiembre, porque no podía, no podía tener para el pasaje y yo no le quería pedir a mi mamá porque pues me daba vergüenza. En septiembre me vine el primero de septiembre, el [19]66, se me hace [19]65, [19]66 por ahí así. Y él fue en diciembre, yo me vine en septiembre y hasta diciembre fue él. En la madrugada llego, se perdió, anduvo toda la noche por ahí, no dio con el lugar en donde estábamos nosotros, en la Mesa, en Tijuana, ahí se llama Rancho Grande, ahí el lugar donde vivía mi mamá. Y pues ya vio las, ya él vio las hijas grandes, ya mi muchacha ya se había olvidado del novio que dejó en Guadalajara, ya andaba noviando acá con otro muchacho. Y ya viendo él los hijos que verdaderamente estaban grandes, dijo… Ella andaba con un muchacho, andaba noviando con un muchacho que era emigrado. Entonces él, se pues se asoció, ¿verdad?, de que mi hija pos quería, quería venirse para acá y dijo: “Tú no tienes que andar con nadie, dijo, “yo les voy a arreglar”. Y metió la solicitud, pronto nos arreglamos gracias a Dios. Entramos en el [19]67, en junio del [19]67. ML: Y, ¿dónde trabajo por primera vez en los Estados Unidos? MS: Trabajé en Stockton, yo no sabía, venía de la ciudad, yo no sabía nada de campo, nada. Venimos a la cereza, a la cherry. Primeramente nomás barbeábamos todo alrededor cuando ya mis hijas ya estaban, pos la mayor, tenía ya casi dieciséis años. La otra no, la otra estaba más chica, pero como quiera nos la llevábamos a trabajar. Barbeábamos y luego él pues ya se enfadó, ¿verdad?, de ponernos la escalera y ya dijo: “No, pues tienen que enseñarse a agarrar la escalera”. Agarrábamos la escalerona de dieciocho pies y nos la, se nos venía como corbata, nos la ensartábamos aquí en el cuello, mucho, ya lloraba yo también. Se acabó la cereza y él como era lechuguero se vino para Arizona, en Somerton. En Somerton nosotros pues no podíamos trabajar en la lechuga, porque no nos daban. Entonces conseguimos en una compañía trabajo, ahí trabajamos en el limón, trabajamos este, en el tomate, trabajamos en el desahije de melón, trabajamos en el volteo de melón, trabajamos en la naranja, en la toronja. Solas las tres, mis dos muchachas y yo, y mi hijo y mi esposo en la lechuga. ML: ¿En Arizona? MS: En Arizona, en Somerton. Como dice Cuca, ¿verdad? En ese tiempo a nosotros, mi primer sueldo era de $0.75 centavos la hora. Sacábamos un cheque de $50 dólares, $55 cuando mucho, pero en ese tiempo… MC: A la semana. MS: A la semana, pero en ese tiempo, pues todo estaba muy barato, ¿verdad? Todo no estaba como ahora. Yo con $20 dólares llenaba mi refrigerador de leche y de toda la comida para todos mis hijos. Y no había, no había servicios sanitarios, ya empezamos a oír de César, ya andaba César empezando a… En el [19]67 cuando entramos nosotros a, que fuimos a Stockton, yo iba al concilio de allá de Stockton, porque me… luego luego me quedé, entré con tres de mis hijos y tres se me quedaron en Tijuana porque no pudo, lo que ganaba mi esposo no fue suficiente para emigrarnos a todos juntos en, toda la familia. Entonces nomás me traje los tres primeros, los más grandes, los mayores y tres dejé en Tijuana. Luego luego inmediatamente que ya empezamos a trabajar yo metí la solicitud para emigrar las otras tres que se me habían quedado en Tijuana. Y me mandaban, me escribían, ¿verdad?, el consulado y pues yo tuve que buscar dónde me ayudaran con esas cartas y fui al este, ¿cómo se llama? El lugar que dije ahorita, el concilio de Stockton y ahí me ayudaban y luego mi esposo entró a una organización que se llama CSO [Community Services Organization], en Stockton, donde estaba Fred Ross, que parece que era el director de, el que fue el enseñó a César a organizar. MG: Y, ¿qué año? MS: En el [19]67, 1967. Allí conocí a este, a que me organizó para entrar a la unión, a este, ¿cómo se llama? Se me olvida cómo se llama, este, no recuerdo ahorita. MG: ¿Dónde encontró a Fred Ross? MS: En Stockton, en la CSO. En Stockton, ahí, ahí fue. MG: CSO. MS: Ahí nosotros éramos miembros de esa organización y ahí conocí a Gilberto Padilla. Gilberto Padilla era el organizador en ese tiempo, que andaba enrolando gente sin tener contrato, sin obligación a trabajar baja contrato de unión. Nosotros pagábamos $10 dólares nomás con el derecho, anuales. Con el derecho de defunción, si acaso nos moríamos en ese tiempo nos daban $1,000 dólares, me parece que para la defunción y era todo el compromiso que teníamos nosotros con la unión. Después fuimos migrantes, ¿verdad? Ya pos nos hicimos prácticamente migrantes. Mi esposo después que terminó la cereza en Stockton, nos venimos a Arizona, a Somerton y luego él trabajaba en Somerton, luego se iba para Nuevo México, luego se iba para, para… Eran como dos o tres lugares donde hacía la lechuga, él y mi hijo. Y luego se regresaban luego en, para mayo, nos íbamos nuevamente a Stockton, nos movíamos para allá. Todo mi equipaje lo, lo traíamos en una station wagon. MC: Como la casa rodante. MS: Era una casa rodante prácticamente, seis de mis hijos, ya en ese tiempo como le digo yo me, yo me involucré con la unión porque yo necesitaba ayuda, para que me ayudaran con los, con leérmelas y este, llenarme las cartas que del consulado. Ahí fue donde conocí a… ML: ¿La unión llenaba eso? MC: Eran los servicios que daban a la gente. MS: Eran los servicios que daba la unión en ese tiempo. No tenían una oficina, ellos estaban en el concilio y estaban ahí en la CSO. En esa organización de la CSO, aho era donde iba este Gilberto Padilla, en ese tiempo yo no conocía a César. Los, las, eran muy mal el sistema de, de… No teníamos servicios sanitarios, como dice ella. Un bote, un bote de soda en ese tiempo ni siquiera eran de aluminio, eran de, eran de… MC: De fierro nomás. MS: De fierro, se oxidaba. MC: Todos oxidados y así tenías que tomar agua. MS: Yo, yo estaba saliendo, yo estaba saliendo embarazada de mi niña que nació aquí, de mi hija, ya tiene treinta y tantos años. [Es]taba saliendo embarazada, malísima que me ponía. Y salí embarazada de ella, malísima que me ponía y tomar en ese bote… MC: Apestoso. MS: Y que todos tomábamos y luego de repente oxidado, ¡hijole! En cuanto me tomaba el agua por allá iba a dar. No sabíamos trabajar en el azadón cortito, en ese tiempo era el cortito, en Arizona. Andábamos con el azadón, nos tocó un mayordomo, se llamaba Roberto, no recuerdo el apellido, pero le decían por mal nombre, le decían El Látigo. Él fue el que nos enseñó a trabajar con en el azadón y todo eso, porque no sabíamos nada, nosotros no sabíamos nada. MC: Nada del fil. MS: Nada de fil, nada. Yo venía de la ciudad. Aunque nací en un pueblo, me crié en Guadalajara, así es de que pues yo no sabía nada de campo, de campo no sabía nada, absolutamente nada. Nos íbamos cuando teníamos ganas… Eran unos surcos larguísimos, a mí se me hacían eternos con el azadón cortito, si medio se enderezaba uno, cuando ya volteaba, nombre, ya los compañeros ya nos habían dejado por allá y a uno, pues le da vergüenza que lo dejen atrás, así es de que, teníamos que sudar la gota gorda para alcanzarlos. Para ir al baño nos hacíamos casita, nos teníamos que ir… MC: Se cubría, entre las mujeres se… MS: Entre las mujeres teníamos que cubrirnos e íbamos a un, a una, a como un ditch, un… MC: Un zajoncito, una zanja. MS: Una zanja, un zanja ahí medio nos bajábamos para, para hacer, para servicio sanitario que teníamos la necesidad. ML: Y, ¿las mujeres no trabajaban solas? MC: Pos, ¿cómo? MS: Necesitábamos dos, tres para poder… MC: La ayuda de los demás. MS: Para podernos cubrir, los hombre pos qué, ellos no tenían problema, pero uno… Y luego ahí, aquí en Arizona, en Somerton hay un animal que le dicen sapotoro, que echa unos bramidos. La primera vez que yo lo escuché me espanté tanto, (risas) híjole… MC: Que pegó la carrera. MS: Pues ni luego, ni podía subir Cuca, estaba así ya… MC: Muy bajo. MS: Sí, muy abajo y ahí voy, medio gateando, pero un sustazo que nos dimos con ese animal. Es un sapo que se comen allá en Arizona, se lo comen los filipinos, se los comen. Se llama sapotoro, eso es lo que es, lo que he escuchado. Mucho, el mayordomo, se ponía aquí cuando nosotros entrábamos al surco y ahí estaba el agua. Nada con hielo, nada de vasos individuales, nada de nada. Nada, nunca un escusado, no nada. Entrábamos aquí, tomábamos agua porque entrábamos todos juntos al surco y luego se daba la vuelta y nos esperaba acá en la otra cabecera del surco, a mí se me hacía eterno. No podía uno parar a medio surco, porque pos lo dejaban. Y traían unas mujeres que les decían Las Socias, parece que eran, dirían pues, eran matrimonio, dos mujeres. Ellas pos andaban y eran las que nos jalaban, eran las que nos, las que llevaban adelante pa que jalaran a los demás de que íbamos trabajando. MC: Es que en ciertas compañías, la voy a interrumpir doña María. Yo tengo una comadre que es de Texas y ella trabajó todo el tiempo en el fil, lechuguera, es en el apio y pues todo lo que se refiere a verdura, ¿verdad? Y siempre le pagaban un cinco más por hora de su sueldo, para que fuera adelante porque ésa va pushando la gente. MS: La va jalando. MC: Son las pushadoras, son las que van adelante porque la gente que va a atrás, luego voltea: “Eh, mira, te va ganando y es una mujer”. Pos tienen que correr hasta los hombres, ¿verdad? Y ella le, a veces que hay mujeres muy ligeras para trabajar y a ella le pagaban más porque las compañías tienen sus mañas para hacer que la gente camine. ML: Y, ¿había muchas mujeres que entraban al campo como socias, como matrimonio así? MS: No, no yo nomás esa conocí, esa pareja. Esa pareja, pero era la que nos jalaba. Les decían Las Socias, pero no porque andaban a limpias como nosotros, sino que pos ellas o tomaban cerveza o sabrá Dios qué. MC: Sí, porque muy rápidas para trabajar. MS: Entonces… Y el mayordomo las deja que hagan lo que quieran, quiero decirlo, lo que quieran porque no le revisan su trabajo que están haciendo, las dejan que hagan cochinero. Y a nosotros sí, a los que no somos socios o que somos los que vamos más atrás, nos revisan o nos dejan que déjemos… Anteriormente en ese tiempo que yo empecé a trabajar en el, en el campo, todavía no perfeccionaban la máquina para tirar la semilla de, de lo que fuera de, de melón, de lechuga, de tomate, de lo que fuera, sino que chorreaba así. Ahora no, ahora ya perfeccionaron las máquinas y ya deja la plantita ya más separada y anteriormente era un… MC: Un montón de matitas, ¿verdad? MS: Un montón de plantitas. Tenía uno que, en el azadonazo dejar, dejar el espacio para que, para que ya estuviera la plantita y no tienes que cortarla porque pos entonces vas a dejar pelón el surco, ¿verdad? Va uno sorteando a dejar una o dos plantitas y si dejas dos o tres, con la mano rápido tienes que darse el azadonazo y con la otra mano pos vas quitando lo que te, lo que sobra. Esa es la manera de trabajar. Ahora no, ahora ya está diferente y sí trabajamos en, en, pos en muchas cosas, en todo. ML: En los campos donde las dos trabajaban, ¿era la primera vez que ustedes trabajaban con filipinos? MC: Bueno, la primera vez que trabajé con filipinos fue cuando, cuando estaba, ese campo lo corrían los filipinos, nomás no me acuerdo cómo se llamaba. Carajarian. MS: Carajarian. MC: Carajarian, se llamaba en rancho. Y este, y allí como les expliqué, ¿verdad? A las once de la mañana, todos gritamos a la misma hora: “¡Huelga!”. Y nos salimos, todos hicimos huelga. Pos vinieron buses, buses de la ciudad a llevarnos presos nada más porque nos salimos en huelga, nos metieron a la cárcel, nos golpearon, nos desgreñaron. ML: ¿Golpearon a las mujeres también? MC: Sí, a las mujeres. MS: Sí también. MC: Como si fueran hombres, nos rociaron con gases lacrimógenos, únicamente porque estábamos defendiendo el derecho de diez minutos de break. El derecho de tener ganas, de… MS: De servicio sanitarios. MC: De ir al baño, de tener papel en el baño, agua pa lavarse las manos. Es un derecho de cualquier humano, ¿verdad? Y de querer agua fría y vasos individuales. Esos derechos, por estar peleando eso, los teamsters vinieron y nos golpearon la Policía y nos metieron a la cárcel. Pero de ahí comenzamos, ¿verdad doña María?, las luchas. Donde quiera nos agarrábamos de las greñas. Tengo una hermana que en la calle o donde quiere, porque íbamos a hacer huelgas a, ¿se acuerda de los vinos Gallo? También hacerles huelgas a las licorerías. MS: Íbamos a boicotearlas. MC: A boicotear, a boicotear. MG: Algunos filipinos están de parte de teamsters, ¿no? MS: Sí. MC: Sí, algunos sí. MG: Convertir a teamsters de UFW [United Farm Workers], ¿no? MS: Sí. MG: ¿Por qué? MC: Porque el rancho ya, o sea los patrones, los dueños no eran los filipinos, sino que los filipinos eran los trabajadores, los mayordomos, los que vivían en esos campos. Pero Carajarian eran gringos, ¿verdad doña María? Y eran… MG: Carajarian, ¿cómo se dice? Armenian. MC: Pues yo no sé, pero pues otra raza, ¿verdad? Pero, pero este, ellos fueron los que firmaron el contrato con los teamsters. Entonces por eso los filipinos se quedaron ahí porque pues ellos ahí vivían y tuvieron que ser de los teamsters aunque no quisieran, ¿verdad? Sí, ya le digo. ML: ¿Ellos no querían? MC: No querían, pero pos los forzaron. MS: Muchos de los filipinos, disculpa Cuca que te quite la palabra… MC: Sí no, no, está bien doña María. MS: En 1973 cuando estalló la huelga, mi compañía en 1970, nosotros venimos para acá para, en el [19]69 nos venimos aquí para Indio, porque aquí vivía una hermana de mi esposo en Indio. Y nos venimos para acá y estaban haciendo huelga en Freedman. Estaban para organizarlos para que entrara la Unión de Campesinos. Ahí fue donde yo conocí a César, aquí a pesar de que ya era miembro de la Unión, no lo conocía. Lo conocía en foto, pero personalmente no lo conocía. En 1970, en marzo, 15 de marzo, 15 de abril, no estoy muy segura, se firmó el primer contrato con Freedman. Entonces nosotros andábamos trabajando, nosotros digo mi esposo, mi hijo y mis dos hijas, andábamos trabajando en el rábano, hincados en, por eso estoy renca, en el… MC: En la humedad. MS: Entre la humedad y el calor y todo y el mayordomo del rábano nos dijo, dice: “Pues ya vamos, ya vamos a entrar a trabajar”, dijo, “con Freedman”, dijo, “pero pos vas a hacer con contrato de la Unión de Campesinos. Ahí donde está ahora la bracero, la Casa del Trabajador. MC: Ahí con Raciel. MS: Ahí donde está Raciel. MC: Ahí fue la primer oficina. MS: Esa era la oficina donde estaba la Unión de Campesinos. Ahí fue, ahí fue donde se, fue la primera oficina que tuvo la Unión de Campesinos después de que ya se firmó el contrato. MG: ¿En qué año? MS: El [19]70, 1970. MG: ¿Es el primer año para la Casa del Trabajador? MC: En aquel entonces no era Casa del Trabajador, era el sindicato. MS: No era Casa del Trabajador, fuera de la Unión de Campesinos de César Chávez. MG: Ah, okay, sí. MS: Era la mismo lugar donde está ahorita la Casa del Trabajador, era donde estaba la oficina del Sindicato de la Unión de Campesinos. MG: Okay. MS: Ahí fuimos a registrarnos para empezar a trabajar bajo contrato de unión. El mayordomo que le digo que era donde nosotros andábamos trabajando en el rábano, cortando, haciendo, enbonchando rábano, nos dijo dice: “Yo voy a trabajar”, dijo, “con, en la uva, si quieren”, dijo, “va a haber trabajo”, dijo, “pero es con la Unión de Campesinos. Tienen que, tienen que ser miembros de la Unión de Campesinos”. “No, pos no hay problema, nosotros ya somos miembros”.Ya éramos miembros, nosotros estuvimos pagando $10 anuales cada año nomás para ser miembros de la unión, desde el [19]67. Entonces pos no tuvimos problemas porque nosotros ya éramos miembros. Empezamos a trabajar como en abril del [19]70 ya en, en la… MC: Bajo contrato. MS: Bajo la unión de, bajo contrato de la unión. Yo, pos no nomás yo, dos de mis hijas, mi esposo y yo somos campesinos privilegiados, vamos diciendo, porque nosotros tenemos una miseria de pensión de unión, también aparte del Seguro Social ahora que ya estamos retirados, ¿verdad? Recibimos también una pequeña pensión de la Unión de Campesinos. Es una miseria verdaderamente porque yo trabajé desde el [19]70 hasta el [19]96 que Freedman cerró su compañía y pues me están dando de a tiro una miseria. ML: ¿Cómo se conocieron? MC: En las huelgas, ahí, ¿verdad? Y luego vivíamos en el mismo campo. MS: Vivíamos en un campo de Gobierno. MC: Donde puros campesinos, teníamos que ser campesinos para poder vivir ahí. MS: Y todavía existe ese campo. MC: Sí. Y hemos trabajado juntas en las huelgas, hemos trabajado juntas en el campo donde vivíamos, porque comenzamos a hacer huelgas también porque no nos querían componer la casa. Como éramos campesinas, nos hicieron las casas de puro bloque, no pintura, no piso. Todo, todo nomás lo básico. Y nosotros queríamos vivir decentemente porque somos seres humanos. Haga de cuenta como tenían unos marranitos ahí encerrados y no, no, dijimos: “Tenemos que, nos tienen que componer la casa”, ¿verdad doña María? Hicimos huelga, no pagamos la renta seis meses, hasta que nos compusieran las casas. Y la (ininteligible) se depositó en un banco, ¿verdad? El abogado nos ayudó, pero nos compusieron las casas. Y en ese lugar hemos luchado también, luchamos mucho tiempo porque ya cuando nuestros hijos [es]tuvieron grandes, comenzamos a mirar que un vende drogas comenzó a envolver a los niños en la droga y fui y le dije a doña a María: “¿Está mirando lo que yo miro?”. Que nuestros hijos, los niños de ocho años, de esos, gente grande ya, hombres grandes, les están poniendo el cigarro de mariguana en la boca. MS: Los golpeaban. MC: Los golpeaban, les ponían, les pegaban en el estomago y les decían: “Abre la boca, chúpale, chúpale ándale, chúpale. Si no le chupa le voy a matar a su mamá”. Y los niños se enseñaron a fumar mariguana de esa forma. Los agarraban aquí los grandulones, debajo del brazo y les ponían aquí yo no sé qué a oler, ¿verdad? Los inyectaban, ya los niños grandecitos. Ya cuando tenían trece, catorce años decían: “Ése ya está prendido, mándalo a vender”. O sea que se hizo así, un bonche de vendedores de droga, de puros niños. Y doña María, dije: “Pues, ¿qué nos vamos a quedar con los brazos cruzados? Hay que hacer algo”. Y ya le dije, pues vamos pidiéndole ayuda a una persona, ¿verdad? Que es nuestra amiga, que ella este, pues estudió para abogada. Y un abogado, dije: “Dile que nos haga una cita con la Policía, necesitamos que nos oigan”. Y ya fuimos con la Policía y fuimos también, yo fui con el sacerdote, un sacerdote que hay aquí muy bueno para, para hablar con los jóvenes, que él tiene grupos juveniles y dije: “Este padrecito nos tiene que ayudar, porque a él le importan los jóvenes”. Fui y le dije: “Padre, necesitamos su ayuda”. “¿Pues qué está pasando María?”, me dijo. “Pos mire, tenemos este problema ahí que están envolviendo a nuestros hijos en las drogas”. Y luego dice él: “Pero yo no sé nada de droga”. “Pues yo no sé cómo le va hacer, pero usted nos tiene que ayudar”. Y el padrecito pobrecito, él nos ayudó. Él habló con los del condado, vinieron los del condado los que trabajan con jóvenes adictos y nos hablaron del problema de las drogas, cómo está envolviendo a la juventud, qué clase de drogas había porque nosotros no conocíamos nada. Pero no era bastante para nosotros, dijimos: “Eso no es suficiente, nosotros queremos algo más”. “Bueno, pues entonces vamos a hablar a este, concientizar las madres de familia”. Fuimos y tocamos puertas, hablando con las madres de familia acerca del alcoholismo, de la… ML: ¿En qué año? MC: ¿Eso en qué año fue doña María? En el [19]88. MS: Como en el [19]80 y… ¿qué sería? Por ahí entre el [19]84 y [19]85. MC: Por ahí. Bueno, pues tocamos puertas, enseñamos una película, un video, una película para… MS: Hacíamos juntas con, con… MC: Con las familias. MS: Con unas cuatro o cinco, cuatro o cinco familias las juntábamos en una casa, les pasábamos la película, luego venían de los drogadictos, alcohólicos y drogadictos que ya estaban… MC: Recuperados. MS: Recuperándose, o a veces recuperándose, a veces ya recuperados. Hablar con las madres de cómo empezaban los hijos, de qué síntomas había, etcétera. MC: Sí, porque nosotros no sabíamos nada, pero no era suficiente. Entonces dijimos: “Bueno, pues ahora vamos a tener… Esto es una guerra, hay que, tenemos que atacar por los dos lados por el bueno y por el peligroso”, ¿verdad? Fuimos a la Policía, pos como que nos juzgaron dijeron: “Ay, estas viejas chismosas”. Le dijimos, le dije al Capitán Montes, era el Jefe de la Policía de Indio, dije: “Mire”, dije, “Capitán, este problema de la droga es como un cáncer, se va ir haciendo más grande y más grande y más grande y si usted no le pone atención ni la Policía tampoco”. Han de decir: “Al cabo estos mexicanos que se maten”, porque no nomás era la droga, sino que se mataban. Todo casi, cada semana había muertos, ¿verdad doña María? Había un barrio que no se podía ver con el campo, de ahí tiraban balazos para acá y de aquí para allá y casi cada semana había muertos. Y como íbamos a poder sostener esa cosa así. No podíamos sostener, que siguiera pasando eso. Entonces ellos nos dieron, cada semana nos daban juntas, ¿verdad doña María? Íbamos y llevábamos todo lo que nos aconsejaron, nos dijeron: “Fíjense bien en qué casa están vendiendo la droga. Fíjense bien qué vehículos están llegando ahí, qué clase de gente. MS: Llevábamos placas y todo. MC: Sí, llevábamos toda la información, dije: “Pero pos si ese no es nuestro trabajo, ustedes son los policías”. “No, pero ustedes son los policías de su barrio”. Bueno está bien, llevamos toda la información, nos dimos cuenta quién vendía, quién todo, ¿verdad? Y este, y le dije al Capitán Montes: “Mire, usted ha de decir: «Estos mexicanos que se maten»”, le dije, “pero estos mexicanos nacieron aquí. Son nuestros hijos, son el futuro de este país”, le dije, “usted se da cuenta”, le dije, “qué futuro le espera a este país si no hace nada el Gobierno y la comunidad tampoco”. Desde entonces comenzamos a tener redadas ahí, ¿se acuerda doña María? Pero a ella y a mí, como éramos las viejas metiches y las chismosas nos balacearon los carros, nos balacearon los focos, el cooler. Un día oíamos la, porque en el campo no había pistolas. MS: Nos mandaban mensajes. MC: Sí. MS: Que nos iban a matar. MC: Ahí no había pistolas, ahí pura metralla, pura metralleta. Oí que la metralla: ¡trun, trun, trun, tun, tun! “Doña María, doña María”, le hablé por teléfono. MS: Por teléfono. MC: “Doña María, ¿oyó los balazos?”. “Sí”. “Pues, ¿dónde sería?”. “Aquí arriba de mi cabeza”. “¿Cómo que arriba de su cabeza?”. “Sí”, dijo, “me balacearon el cooler”. Todo el cooler balaceado. No teníamos un foco, ahí no había focos. MS: No. MC: Nada, porque todos focos balaceados, todas las pantallitas que los postes tienen el foco y un platito arriba, ¿verdad?, para que proteja al foco, todo alrededor balaceado. Nombre, era una cosa espantosa, no podíamos dormir, porque a media noche andaban con las motos alrededor de los apartamentos. Hasta tú mirabas grupos hasta de treinta muchachitos entre trece y catorce años, quince o dieciséis, ya los tenían envueltos en la droga. Niños buenos, que iban a la escuela, dejaron de ir a la escuela, se dedicaron a vender droga. Tenía dos puertas el campo, por una entraban y por otra salían los vende drogas, pues de los dos lugares había bonches de niños con su bolsita en la mano vendiendo drogas. Entraban ahí, buses de escuelas a comprar drogas, los manejadores de los buses ahí compraban droga. Ahí llegaban las limosinas de, de aeropuerto de Palm Springs, ahí llegaban troqueros, ahí llegaban los basureros, los que manejan los basureros, las trocas de la basura. Ahí llegaban gringos, ahí llegaban negros, ahí llegaban de todo. MS: De todo. MC: De todos, güeros, niñas embarazadas, bueno, era una cosa horrible. Hasta que nosotros pusimos todo lo que pudimos, ¿verdad doña María?, de esfuerzo. Hicimos huelgas a los jueces, porque me tocó a mí que, me tocó a mí dar la venta de droga. Llego un, unos americanos y se parquearon enfrente de mi casa, pues yo miré por la cocina y dije: “Oh, ésta es mi oportunidad”. Agarré el teléfono y miré como una bolsa así, yo creo era cocaína, porque era blanca como harina y un paquetón de billetes, fue el pago, ¿verdad?, para el muchacho que vivía en el campo. Le llamé a la Policía, viene la Policía y agarra al que agarró el dinero, eran $10,000 dólares en efectivo. Le encontraron $10,000 en anfetaminas y una metralleta. A la media hora ya estaba libre buscándome pa matarme y dijimos: “Bueno y, ¿cómo está eso? ¿Por qué lo dejaron libre? Si todo lo que traía, era para que lo hubieran metido a la cárcel”. “No, porque no tenía antecedentes”. “Oh my God”. Ahí vamos otra vez a hacerle huelgas a los, a los jueces, le dijimos: “Ya no queremos que los dejen salir, queremos que ustedes pongan atención, quién es el que los está involucrando, porque tenía cuadrilla de muchachos que vendían droga. Tenía un carro para cada vendedor, para jefe de, de niños de grupo. Había ocho carros, ¿verdad doña María? Ocho carros, nuevecitos ahí en la puerta para cada, para cada grupo. ML: ¿Les puedo hacer más preguntas sobre su activismo en los setentas? MC: Sí, cómo no. ML: En los setentas, usted dijo que a las mujeres les pagaban igual que a los hombres. MS: Eso fue en el [19]73, discúlpeme. ML: [Mil novecientos] setenta y tres. MS: Cuando estalló la huelga, cuando vinieron los teamsters. ML: Sí, a ustedes las trataban igual que a todos los otros trabajadores o, ¿trataban a los hombres trabajadores mejor o peor que ustedes? MS: No, igual. ML: Igual. MC: Sí, con contrato sí, pero donde no había contrato no. MS: Donde no había contrato no. Pero en el [19]70, vamos diciendo el 85% de los rancheros aquí en el área estuvieron bajo contrato de unión, la mayoría. En el [19]73 aún no terminaba nuestro contrato cuando vinieron los teamsters. MC: A meter. MS: A meterse. MC: Y destruyeron todo. MS: Nosotros nos prestaba la unión, vamos diciendo, la unión nos prestaba, ¿verdad? Nosotros teníamos con Freedman, era el ranchero más grande de aquí del área del valle. Pero había otras compañías más chicas, ¿verdad?, de que no tenían suficientes trabajadores. Entonces nos prestaban, el compromiso de nosotros era con Freedman, ya que terminábamos el trabajo con Freedman nos prestaban a otras compañías a que fuéramos a trabajar. Todavía aún no se terminaba nuestro contrato del, de… Porque se firmó un contrato, el primero por un año y luego fue por dos años. En el primer contrato fue una cosa muy buena porque César, César logró que tuviéramos plan, plan médico, plan dental, plan visión. Tuvimos break, que no estábamos acostumbrados a eso, tuvimos agua fría, tuvimos vasos individuales, los escusados cerquitas de nosotros. Teníamos la protección de que no espreyaran los files estando cuadrillas cerquitas, con pesticidas. Estando las cuadrillas cerquitas de donde estábamos nosotros trabajando, tenían que estar a cierta distancia de, de nosotros para poder que estuvieran espreyando pesticidas. Prohibió los pesticidas que estaban dañando la gente, los prohibió en ese contrato, fue un contrato muy, muy bueno el primer contrato. Teníamos el derecho de que si había que, que si el ranchero violaba el contrato, nosotros teníamos el derecho de, de meter agravios y teníamos una persona que era, era la… MC: Intermediaria. MS: Pues vamos diciendo el, el, ¿cómo se dice? MC: ¿No era el mediador, doña María? MS: Sí, pues un mediador, este, donde le daba el gane a cualquiera de los dos lados. MC: El que tenía la razón. MS: Dependiendo el caso, el que tenía la razón. Tuvimos el derecho a tener un representante de la unión en cada cuadrilla para revisar que no metieran gente sin contrato, sin despacho. A mirar que se llevaran a cabo los tiempos, los breaks y comida y todo, media hora de comida sin pago. Los breaks sí eran, sí eran pagados. Nos daban un break en la mañana y otro al medio día, a las doce del día para que comiéramos. Tuvimos todo ese derecho, luego también este, pues el derecho de arbitraje, ¿verdad? Ah, pues era un árbitro el que estaba ahí mirando cuando nosotros tuvimos muchos agravios. Yo gané muchos agravios porque como ya estaba muy envuelta yo con la unión, a mí me ponían en diferentes cuadrillas, ¿verdad?, para que estuviera mirando y este… En el [19]73, no nomás estábamos en la compañía de Freedman, nos mandaban a otras compañías y todavía no, no terminábamos el contrato, todavía no se terminaba el contrato cuando vinieron los teamsters. Los trajeron los rancheros a meterse y a tratar de organizarnos a nosotros. Mi esposo, cuando él andaba de ilegal acá, ¿verdad? Ya había trabajado con la compañía de teamsters, ya había estado con ése y dice, eso fue en Martínez, dice que en Martínez ellos eran ilegales, mi esposo y un cuñado mío; y como eran buenos trabajadores hacían a un lado a las personas que tenían, que estaban como miembros de unión y que tenían la señoría por darles el trabajo a ellos, porque ellos eran buenos, buenos trabajadores. Y el representante de la unión de teamsters, no le interesaba. Entonces mi esposo ya tenía experiencia con los teamsters y ya sabía que pos no era, no era una compañía, una unión que fuera responsable con sus, con sus miembros. Y nosotros corríamos a los teamsters. En una ocasión, andábamos trabajando acá para… No recuerdo cómo se llama la compañía, pero cerca de la ochenta y tantas, cuando ya sale uno casi para allá, para México pal rumbo de Mexicali. Andábamos ahí cuando llegaron los teamsters, eran mexicanos, eran de todo y vinieron a hablar con nosotros. Y nosotros le dijimos al mayordomo: “Mira, nosotros tenemos todavía contrato con la unión, si tú nos estás forzando”… Porque nos forzaban a que saliéramos para que, a que paráramos de trabajar, para que oyéramos, escucháramos a los teamsters, lo que nos querían decir. “Sí tú nos vas a obligar a salir a escuchar a los teamsters, lo que vamos a hacer es sentarnos y nos vas a tener que pagar el sueldo, porque nosotros no queremos esos teamsters”. Y no sabíamos con qué gente, no sabíamos con qué contábamos porque era gente de toda la que estábamos trabajando. Y empezamos nosotros a gritar: “¡Viva la Unión de Campesinos y viva César Chávez!”. Nombre, pues luego luego todos se… como en ese tiempo, ¿verdad?, pues la unión estaba muy fuerte, muy fuerte que estaba. Luego luego todos nos pusimos de acuerdo sin, sin estar preparados, sin ponernos de acuerdo nada, todos a una voz: “O echas pa fuera los teamsters o nos sentamos y no trabajamos”. “No, no, no, no”. Tuvo que decirles que se salieran. Y no nomás allí nos obligaban, en todos, en… Todavía no terminaban los contratos, fuimos a una compañía, tampoco no recuerdo cómo se llama, allí nos quisieron hacer firmar un contrato, un acuerdo con la Unión Teamster. Dejamos el trabajo, no quisimos nosotros nada, nada. Entonces hizo, hubo una junta ahí en el parque, ahí donde está enfrente de la Casa del Trabajador, nos citó Cesar, éramos muchísima gente y dijo: “O arreglamos esto, mañana terminan los contratos”. Fue el 15 de… No estoy segura si fue el 15 de marzo o 15 de abril, pero uno de esos dos meses del [19]73. “No sabemos qué compañía se vaya a quedar con nosotros, no sabemos si todos vayan a salir. Yo quiero que los más fuertes”, dijo, “ya desde una vez desde ahora les pongo de acuerdo que el que me quiera seguir”, dijo, “tiene que salirse”. Y a una voz: “Freedman”. Ellos continuaron con el contrato. Nosotros teníamos el derecho de seguir trabajando, porque ya teníamos señoría ahí, ya teníamos tres años trabajando, pero como César necesitaba personas que le empujáramos a las otras, ¿verdad? Entonces nosotros voluntariamente nos salimos, él nos pidió que nos saliéramos y nos salimos. Pidiendo un permiso especial en la compañía para no perder nuestra señoría. Así fue como nos involucramos en la huelga en el [19]73. Ahí como dice ella, ahí hubo golpeados, allí hubo arrestados, a nosotros nos arrestaron tres veces consecutivamente. Para un Jueves Santo nos arrestaron como a las seis de la mañana, todo el día nos estuvimos en la cárcel de Indio. Nos obligaron, estábamos hincados rezando a la orilla del field y poquitito antes de, de ese día que nos arrestaron la primera vez habíamos estado en otro rancho, pegadito ahí cerquititas, en donde había muchos filipinos, que vivían allí en ese rancho. Ahí les tenían unas cabinas para que vivieran y ellos se querían salir. Nosotros les pedimos que se salieran a unirse con nosotros, ¿verdad? Se querían salir, pero los teamsters los agarraban como si fueran animales o fueran costales de papas, de cebollas de lo que sea. Los agarraban y los aventaban, no, no los dejaron salir. Les bloquearon y no los dejaron salir. De ahí nos fuimos a ese otro rancho donde vino Pablo, el hijo de César Chávez, el mayor de los hijos, es Pablo. MG: Pablo, sí. MS: Él estaba jovencito, en ese tiempo estaba jovencito, fue la primera y única vez que vino. Se llamaba HMS la compañía, HMS o algo así. Ahí estuvimos, venía un Padre católico de Los Ángeles, estaba allí con nosotros, éramos muchos, éramos una cuadrilla como de ochocientas personas aproximadamente, mucha gente. Trajeron un bus, trajeron buses de la Policía, trajeron La Migra, trajeron lo que pudieron, carros, bases y todo y como nos, la Policía llegó y quería… Ya se hizo más de la cuenta, ¿verdad? MG: Está bien, pero tengo muchas personas esperando. Entonces yo quiero continuar por maybe tres minutos y termino. Es posible, voy a regresar y entrevistar en otro tiempo. MS: Oh, está bien. MG: En otro viaje. ¿Está bien? MS: Sí cómo no. MG: Voy a escribir tu número. ML: Yo tengo el número, yo tengo la información. MS: Yo tengo mucho, bueno, pues esa es la historia del [19]73, ¿verdad? De que, pues ese día nos arrestaron. Estaba el Padre, estábamos todos hincados, eran como las dos de la tarde, una y media, por ahí de la tarde. Estaba una temperatura como de 115 grados. MG: Mucho calor. MS: Estábamos todos en la orilla de la carretera hincados, que no nos dejaban arrimar cerquititas de los trabajadores. Estábamos pidiéndoles que se salieran, ese día fue Pablo, Pablo Chávez, salió el supervisor, era un, ¿sería americano? Un grandotote y Pablo quiso poner en, se envalentonó, ¿verdad? Pero Pablo estaba jovencito, estaba jovencito. El supervisor, nombre, lo agarró y le dio un trompón que lo aventó al suelo y luego sobre de él, se fue y lo revolcó. Revolcó a Pablo. Y pues César tuvo que pedirle de que, se retirara, lo mismo que le paso a Clementina. MC: La hermana mía. Estuvo en la cárcel tres meses en King City, porque ella fue a la pisca del tomate y cuando, o como ella traía, yo les dijera que traía una aguilita de la unión pegada en la camioneta. Entonces fue ella a pedir trabajo, pero los trabajadores le dijeron: “No, están pagando bien poquito el tomate”, le dijo, “queremos hacer huelga”. Dijo mi hermana: “Pues órale”. Dijo: “¿Pero usted sabe cómo se hace huelga?”. Dijo: “Pos todos digan nada más: «¡Huelga!»Y ya nadie trabaja”, ¿verdad? Uh, pues entonces el hombre les silbó a todos y luego les decía a todos: “Vengan con el sombrero”. “¡Huelga!”, se vinieron todos. Y entonces le dijo mi hermana: “Híjole y, ¿ahora que sí qué hago con tanta gente?”. Había muchísima gente y fue como empezó la huelga de los tomates. Mi hermana la empezó, en King City. Duró ocho días la huelga de los tomates, a tomatazos. A mi hermana la jalaban los… Dice mi hermana: Vinieron los policías, le echaron los perros y mi hermana traía los tacos en la, de lonche en la bolsa del pantalón, dijo: “Les di a los perros para que no me mordieran”, dijo, “los tacos”. (risas) Dijo: “Pero entonces se vinieron la gente a defenderme, los policías me querían llevar, hasta con caballos me corretearon”, dijo, “unos me jalaban de un lado, otros de otro, del otro brazo”. La descompusieron toda, la golpearon con la macana de los policías. Es, tiene el pelo largo y chino, dice: “Así mira, toda bañada de sangre”. Estuvo encerrada por tres meses, ¿verdad doña María? Dice, y después de ahí dice: “Me sacaron y me llevaron a un convento”, dijo, “las monjitas me cuidaban”, dijo, “porque”, dice, “me querían matar los rancheros”. Porque la gente se hizo, se hizo la huelga muy grande ahí. Dijo: “Porque la gente ya enardecida, voltearon las patrullas con las patas pa arriba, con las llantas pa arriba y la echaron al canal”. Y dice y todo por, nomás por eso que dice, me preguntaban: “¿Cómo se hace la huelga?”. “Pos nomás griten huelga”. Y gritó huelga el muchacho y se dejaron venir todos. “No, ya me andaba”. César Chávez fue el que le ayudó también a salir de la cárcel y todo. Pero le dijo: “Ya no quiero que te metan, que te vuelvan a meter a la cárcel”, dijo, “mejor quiero que estudies pa enfermera porque voy a poner una clínica en Coachella”. Y mi hermana es enfermera. Desde entonces ella trabaja en el Eisenhower. Tiene más de veinte años trabajando ahí y la han querido sacar, la han discriminado, ha peleado, es la única que no han podido sacar, porque se enseñó a pelear y no la pueden sacar. AM: Entonces empecemos con lo básico. ¿Me puede decir dónde y cuándo nació usted? ML: Yo nací en el año, en el año de 1944, el 26 de abril. AM: ¿En dónde? ML: En Santa Cruz Huitziltepec, el estado de, ¿cómo le dicen? Municipio de Molcaxac. AM: Molcaxac. ¿Cómo se llamaban sus padres? ML: Mi papá se llama Antonio López Palacios, mi mamá se llama Josefa Amador, Josefa Amador Morales. AM: Y, ¿tenía hermanos y hermanas? ML: Yo sí tengo. AM: ¿Cuántos? ML: No, no sé decirle, pues tendrá como unos… Cuando yo estaba, yo creo tendrá como unos dos mil, tres mil personas a lo mucho, no lo creo, sí. AM: Y, ¿se conocían más o menos? ML: Sí, es muy conocido porque es un pueblo muy chico, sí. ML: Y pos eso sí, casi todos nos conocemos ahí. Cuando mandamos a pedir algo, a una carta es domicilio conocido, ¿no? Sí, porque pos toda la gente se conoce ahí. AM: Sí, qué bonito. Y, ¿qué hacían sus padres? ML: Pos ellos son campesinos y tonces trabajaban en el campo y como el campo de ellos se ayudaban pues ahí. Y pos yo estaba, yo era jovencita cuando mi papá se vino de bracero acá, en el año [19]59 se vino para acá. AM: ¿Su papá? ML: Sí. AM: Entonces cuando trabajaba él ahí en el pueblo, ¿trabajaba su propio campo o era de…? ML: No, su propio campo. AM: Sí. Y, ¿como qué? ML: Ellos siembran, sembraban maíz, frijol, trigo, es lo que hacían ellos. AM: Y, ¿cuántos años tenía usted más o menos cuando…? ML: De cuando él se vino, yo tenía como unos doce años. AM: Doce años. ML: Trece años. AM: Sí. ML: Doce, trece años, me acuerdo. AM: Y, ¿usted era la mayor o la menor? ML: Sí, yo soy la mayor de todos mis hermanos. AM: ¿Entonces usted le ayudaba a su mamá? ML: Pues sí, yo lo que trabajaba, mi papá se vino para acá y yo y mi mamá solita. Ahí íbamos al campo a trabajar, ajá, sí. AM: ¿Entonces cuidaban a todos los hijos? ML: Pues sí. AM: Y, ¿también trabajaban? ML: Trabajábamos en el campo. Mi papá pos venía por contratos, nomás parece cuarenta y cinco días les daban y se regresaba con poquito dinero. Sí, porque él venía al corte de betabel, nos platicaba. Pues él tenía trabajo en Stockton, California y Lamesa, Texas. Bueno, muchos me dicen, porque ya no me acuerdo, pero sí trabajó. Vino el [19]59, vino en el [19]60 y no me acuerdo. Sí, vino como tres, cuatro veces en el año, no me acuerdo. AM: Y, ¿cómo? ¿No se acuerda usted cómo se enteró él? ML: ¿De qué? AM: Del programa, del trabajo. ML: No, pos él, este, lo invitaba, había contratación y se venía y nos dejaba a nosotros. AM: Sí. ML: Sí, era yo chica todavía y nos dejaba todo el trabajo en la casa. AM: Y usted cuando era chica, ¿tuvo oportunidad de ir a la escuela? ML: No, no tuve oportunidad yo. Mis padres nomás me mandaban los lunes, porque pasaba la lista de la escuela y los viernes también. Ya en la semana me llevaban al campo para cargar los niños, los chiquillos. Yo pos no, casi no, nunca acabé, nunca crucé ni siquiera el año segundo, tercer año. Y así, simplemente pasé primer año. Ni conocía casi la escuela, mis maestros nomás los conocía yo, nomás de nombre, que me decían mis compañeros, porque yo realmente yo no. Sí, es cierto, yo sufrí mucho, bastante de la escuela y sufrí porque no supe ir a la escuela. No, como que yo también me daba miedo porque como antes, los maestros de los pueblos los maltrataban mucho a los niños. AM: Pobres… ML: Sí porque, yo también mis hijas, también no los mandé a la escuela porque los maestros eran… Lo que nos hacía a nosotros y yo me daba tristeza porque mis niñas me los lastimaban ahí. Las golpeaban y entonces tampoco ya no quisieron ir a la escuela las muchachas y mejor, este, me las traje para acá. Y ellos pos no, no, tampoco no fueron a la escuela, sí. AM: Pero aún, ¿usted aprendió a escribir y a leer? ML: Pues sí, aunque yo agarraba mis libros de los niños que yo les compraba, me pedían en la escuela cuando yo ya me casé y los mandé a la escuela y yo agarraba los libros o los periódicos o las revistas que les pedía yo. Me gustaba por los juguetitos, los muñequitos y allí me lo descifraban las letras, porque aprendí ahí yo los cinco vocales y ahí juntaba yo los nombres, porque yo ya estaba grande y luego pues me burlaban y: “No puedes hacer una palabra, no puedes juntarla”. Y me hice el esfuerzo de hacerlo. Ya cuando me casé, pues no sabía leer y ahí mi esposo me corregía ahí también. Ya ahí me aprendí, aunque garabatos y me lo aprendí a hacerlos, sí. AM: ¿Cuándo se casó? ML: Me casé en el año [19]62. AM: [Mil novecientos] sesenta y dos. ML: Sí. AM: ¿Cuántos años tenía? ML: Me casé, agarré para diecisiete años. AM: Oh, bien joven. ML: Sí, me casé joven. AM: ¿Cómo se llamaba, cómo se llama su esposo? ML: Nemesio Meza Ortiz. AM: Nemesio. Y, ¿cuántos años tenía él cuando se casó? ML: Él tenía veintidós. AM: Veintidós. ¿Cómo se conocieron? ML: Pues allá en el pueblo, somos los dos del pueblo. Sí, es un, me casé con él. AM: Y, este, ¿él trabajaba de bracero antes de que…? ML: Sí, él cuando vino era jovencito, se vino de… Porque sus papás también trabajaban en el campo y ya se vino para acá. Él también parece que fue en el [19]60, en el [19]59 vino para acá. Parece que vino de diecinueve años, no me acuerdo. AM: Y, ¿todavía trabajaba como bracero cuando ustedes se casaron? ML: Sí, no, cuando yo me casé ya nomás se fue dos, dos veces, se vino para acá, ya después ya no vino. Ya parece que se acabaron las contrataciones y ya no salió, ya no, ya se quedó a trabajar ahí. Ya después hasta el, hasta el año, no me acuerdo, el [19]72, parece se vino para acá, pero ya nomás vino así de, ¿cómo le dicen? De mojado, así se vino. AM: Y, ¿cómo era para usted cuando él se venía para acá? ¿Qué hacía usted? ¿Se quedaba viviendo sola? ML: Por necesidad. AM: Sí. ML: Con trabajo. Me dejaba los niños, yo sola con tres niños. Me dejaba sin dinero, sin nada, pos era bastante necesidad y él se venía. Pos cuando encontraba buen trabajo, pos me ayudaba, cuando no, no. ML: Y ya pues, pos no, no tardaba mucho, porque se venía unos cinco, seis meses por lo menos alcanzaba para ayudarnos para darles de comer a los niños. Porque ya tenía yo mis niños, eran tres, cuatro muchachitos. Sí, sí, es muy duro para nosotros. AM: ¿Se comunicaba usted con él cuando él estaba de bracero? ML: ¿Cómo? AM: Que si se comunicaban ustedes. ML: Sí. AM: ¿Sí? ML: Sí, entonces ya había teléfonos ya. AM: Oh, ¿por teléfono? ML: Sí, teléfono. Ya pos aunque garabatos mis cartas, se lo hacía yo, (risas) sí, así es. AM: Y, ¿le mandaba dinero? ML: Sí, me mandaba muy poquito. AM: ¿Por carta? ML: Sí, por correo. AM: Por correo. ML: Mandaba. ML: Tengo otros dos, no sé si los tomen en cuenta también. AM: Sí, sí cuentan. ML: Sí. La otra niña tuve en el [19]67, no, el [19]77, se llama Rosario Meza, sí. No, no, no, perdón, [19]74. AM: [Mil novecientos] setenta y cuatro. ML: Y el otro [19]77. AM: Okay. ML: Pero sí, son seis los que viven. AM: Y, ¿él cómo se llama, el último? ML: El último se llama Marlene. AM: Y, ¿fue difícil para usted tenerlos? ML: Pos no, porque todos los tuve en el pueblo, en la casa. AM: Sí. ML: Nunca tuve un doctor, todos vinieron a las manos de Dios. AM: Sí. ML: Sí, es ni modos. (risas) AM: Y cuando se casó usted, ¿se movieron, vivían solos o con sus otras…? ML: No, yo, no nos movimos, sino simplemente vivimos en el mismo patio, pero diferentes casas. AM: Entonces, ¿le ayudaban otras personas a criar sus hijos o nomás era usted? ML: No, nunca me ayudaron, yo los tuve que criar solos. AM: Sí. ML: Sí. Tuve, no, porque mi esposo es huérfano, no tiene, nomás tenía a su papá, pero su papá pos le gustaba mucho tomar y sus hermanas, pos no, pos muy independientes ellas. Yo nomás tuve cuñadas, pero no tuve suegra. AM: Y, ¿todos nacieron en México? ML: Sí, todos nacieron en México. AM: Todos. ML: Sí. AM: Y, ¿en qué año emigraron ustedes? ML: Nosotros emigramos en el año, ¿qué? ¿Le puedo enseñar mi…? AM: Sí. ML: Porque no me acuerdo muy bien, a ver si lo puede ver porque yo no puedo. AM: Sí. Pos no sé si dice el año, pero gracias. ML: No me acuerdo. Sí, aquí tiene el año, nomás que no la veo yo. Me dijeron que aquí tiene el año de cuando yo me, porque me faltan, tengo doce años. AM: ¿Doce años aquí? ML: Sí, doce años de que me emigré. AM: Oh, okay. ML: Sí. AM: Y, ¿sus hijos se quedaron o se vinieron con usted? ML: No, todos vinieron conmigo. AM: Sí. ML: Sí, yo me las traje todo, como el pastor con su rebaño, me las traje a todas. (risas) Sí, así yo me los traje a todos mis niños, me los traje. Los traje chiquillos, pero me los traje todos. AM: Y, ¿quién conocían aquí cuando vinieron? ML: Pues nadie, porque mi hijo mayor es la que vino primero. Vino de trece años y cuando ya los traje a los demás, ya él ya me ayudó. Este, ya él ya tenía diecisiete años, ya me las traje a los otros. Los traje chiquitos, pero ya, ya me vine en el año [19]50 y… No, en el año [19]80 y, ¿qué?, [19]84. Pero me quedé casi cerca de un año en Tijuana. Sí, entonces en el año [19]85 nos venimos para acá. AM: Y, ¿se vinieron en camión o en avión? ML: No, nos pasamos por cerro. AM: Por el cerro. ¿En Tijuana? ML: Sí, vivimos un tiempo en Tijuana. AM: Y, ¿qué hacían ahí en Tijuana? ML: Pos trabajábamos. AM: Sí. ML: Trabajábamos. Yo vendía y mi esposo trabajaba. AM: Y cuando se movieron para acá, ¿a dónde? ML: Sí, ya nos tenía una casa rentada mi muchacho. Y sí, ya nos ayudó y pasamos para acá. Sí, porque… AM: ¿En dónde, en dónde era? ML: Aquí en Los Ángeles. AM: Sí. ML: Aquí vivimos en una casa que de toda la, en la [Calle] Cuarta y la, en la Cuarta y la, ¿la qué? Y la, pos la, la Cuarta pues, cerca de la [Calle] Lorena. AM: Y, ¿en esos días era difícil cruzar la frontera? ML: Para nosotros sí. Bueno, no tan difícil como ahora. Sí, pero pos sí, para nosotros era difícil, sí, porque somos muchos, sí, así es. AM: Y, ¿qué hacen sus hijos ahora? ML: Ellos trabajan, se casaron, se crecieron, se casaron y ahora hacen su vida muy independiente de mí y yo estoy libre. (risas) AM: Pues qué bueno, ¿verdad? ML: Pues sí, ya buscaron su vida ellos, ya hacen su vida muy aparte. Ya yo me quedé sola. Ya pues por lo menos ya no le tengo preocupación, pues ya no. [Es]toy sola y yo y mi esposo ahí andamos. ML: Pos este, yo casi no, nomás este, pos hago la limpieza en la casa y a veces trabajo poquito. Cuando me da un trabajito de la casa, trabajo. Mi esposo pos ya casi él no trabaja, pos tiene sus problemas de la enfermedad que tiene, ya casi no ve, no oye, ya tiene sus problemas él. Pos yo todavía veo un poco, ya todavía no tengo tantos achaques y todavía sirvo para la casa, hago la limpieza, llevo los niños y ahí estoy. AM: Sí. Como reflexión final, ¿qué diría que fue el impacto del Programa Bracero en su vida? ML: Pues yo diría que, que pagara ese dinero el Gobierno, ¿no? Porque como yo, mis padres, pos yo los ayudo lo que puedo, cuando puedo. AM: Sí. ML: Porque mi papá vive. AM: Oh, ¿todavía? ML: Vive, pero ya está muy enfermo, [es]tá lastimado. Que según cuando vinieron a trabajar aquí los mortificaban mucho. Los hacían cargar muchas cajas de verduras y todo, tenían que trabajar a las carreras, de naranja, está pesado todo. Y sí se las, está bien lastimado. Según que se cayó de arriba de un carro y se quedó bien lastimado de aquí del espinazo y siempre, siempre se quejaba de eso y ahora él se quedó así como cumbadito. Sí, no, pues él ora ya no ve, no oye, ya no. No, ya no. Tengo dos hermanos allá pero pos tienen sus hijos y mujeres y yo creo que se darán cuenta que para una nuera, para los suegros y no es… Un día ustedes no saben, pero algún día se darán cuenta que son jovencitos ahora, pero no es igual como los hijos que, o una hija, porque los hijos siempre, yo digo que siempre son responsables los hombres, pero una mujer siempre ve por los padres. Y yo veo que mi papá es, es bien este, indefenso. Pero mis padres, porque vive mi mamá también. Y yo los voy a ver cada, cada vez que puedo. AM: ¿Viven en México todavía? ML: Sí, en México, sí. No, no, nunca pude intentarlos de traerlos, porque yo tengo miedo que le pase algo a uno, si uno lo traigo y uno lo dejo. Porque no pueden, no quieren salir. Si quiere salir uno, tiene que salir uno, pero no, no me arriesgo. A veces quiero sacarlos que por lo menos se distraigan, pero no. Y ahí ya no está, ahí están bien lastimados y ya no se puede. Y por eso yo, me entregó sus papeles, me lo pidió que si yo lo pudiera yo reclamar si quería ese dinero. Pues este, yo ahí no. Hay quién los ayude y pues mis hermanos viven casi lejitos de ellos, los van a ver nomás cuando pueden, cuando no, pos no. Y yo para estarles pidiendo que me lleven para acá y que me lleven para allá los papeles o que me lo hagan, pos no. Yo mejor me voy yo, cuando necesite algún papel y ustedes saben que de para irse de acá del Estados Unidos para a México, pues es un cosa de dinero. AM: Sí, condición. ML: Entonces este, me hice dos viajes para que me ayudaran, vaya, y para sacarle las copias de esos papeles de mi papá y me las traje. Quería traerlo, pero, ¿con qué bota? Pero ellos nos ayudan con un dinerito ahí de los terrenos que tienen ellos. Pos no, no me lo dio, pero sí me dio las copias y yo con eso me estoy presentando a ver si me lo pueden ahí. Yo diría que sí les pagaran, pues muchos señores veo que sufren, no tener un dinero ahí para una medicina, para una ayuda de, pos malcomer ahí. Es muy triste que no tienen nada. Yo digo que es justo que les pagaran ese dinero. Los, yo no sé por qué nunca les ayudaron que les dieran su propio dinero porque ellos son los que trabajaron. No tenían por qué entregarles el Gobierno para que ellos se enriquecieron y, ¿la gente qué? Y eso a veces, [es]tamos a veces enojados porque tienen derecho ellos, ¿por qué? Summary of Interview: Mr. Murillo vividly recalls being in México, Distrito Federal, in 1942, when he was taken at gunpoint by Mexican officials and loaded into a train; there were roughly one thousand men aboard, and by the time they reached California, there were only two hundred men, at most, because so many had jumped off the train; as he was about to be transported to his worksite, American officials asked if he would be willing to take arms and help the United States should the need arise; he agreed and signed a paper that put him on a reserve list, but he was never called to action; in spite of his initial recruitment, he continued voluntarily working as a bracero through the midfifties, primarily in the cotton and lettuce fields of Arizona, California, and Colorado; he goes on to chronicle the various worksites, living and working conditions, duties, daily routines, treatment, payments, contract renewals, and recreational activities; in addition, he mentions receiving a portion of his salary in the form of stamps that he could use to purchase clothing or shoes according to a rationing schedule; he also comments that in the years following the war braceros were generally not treated as well, because their impending necessity was no longer at issue; moreover, he explains how he was ultimately able to use his previous work history to become a U.S. citizen in 1989; he also asserts that braceros not only supported the economy of both countries, but of the war as well. Summary of Interview: Ms. Ibarra recalls her childhood and learning to read at the age of fourteen through a cultural mission program; by the time she was twenty, she was married and pregnant with her first child; her first born son was two years old when her husband enlisted in the bracero program; he went to Irapuato, Guanajuato, México, and waited for fifteen days before getting called; while he was gone she suffered greatly; shortly after he left, their son became very ill and ultimately passed away; it was not until later that she learned the day her husband left for the United States was the day their son died; she goes on to vividly describe all the details surrounding the tragic event, including notifying her husband while he was still in the United States; in addition, one of his little sisters, who was the same age as his son, also passed away about the same time; Matiana later had another son, but her husband was not there when he was born; they went on to have nine children in total; after her husband returned they continued living with his parents; he eventually began working in construction, and they moved around a bit; years passed before he returned to the United States looking for work, and one of their sons even went with him; overall, Matiana suffered greatly when her husband was gone, but as time passed it became easier, especially with the company of her children.
