AA: Bueno señor Gallegos, vamos a empezar preguntándole, ¿dónde y cuándo nació usted? MG: Bueno, yo nací en 1930, en el 30 de marzo. AA: ¿En dónde nació? MG: En México, Chihuahua. AA: ¿En la Ciudad de Chihuahua? MG: No en la ciudad diremos, pero el estado, pero el pueblo donde yo verdaderamente nací se llama Benito Juárez. AA: ¿Benito Juárez? MG: Benito Juárez. AA: Okay. Hábleme un poco de su familia y del lugar éste, Benito Juárez. MG: Bueno, ahí en ese pueblo de Benito Juárez, siempre, no se llamaba así Benito Juárez, se llamaba Ejido Enríquez Punta de Álamos pero le cambiaron a Benito Juárez. Entonces ahí en ese pueblo yo ahí nací, ahí me crié. AA: ¿A qué se dedicaban sus padres? MG: En la agricultura, sembrando. AA: ¿Su papá y su mamá? MG: Sí, no, mi mamá no, nunca le tocó ella el, más que los quehaceres de la casa. AA: Así es. MG: Nomás yo y mi papá eran los que trabajábamos y otro hermano, y luego cuatro hermanas que tuve. AA: ¿Cómo se llamaban sus papás? MG: Mi papá se llamaba Abundio Gallegos. AA: ¿Su mamá? MG: Mi mamá se llamaba Guadalupe Luna. AA: Dice que tiene un hermano y cuatro más hermanas, ¿cómo se llamaban ellas? MG: Sí, se, el hermano se llamaba Gabriel, Gabriel Gallegos y las hermanas una se llama Lupe, se llamaba pues que ya murió. Lupe, Rosa, Aurora y Margarita. AA: Y Margarita. ¿Dónde viven ellos ahora? MG: No, todos ya murieron ellos. Nomás las únicas que está viva es Aurora, pero los demás están muertas ya. AA: ¿Usted vive aquí en San José? MG: Sí, yo vivo aquí en San José. AA: Muy bien. Platíqueme un poco de lo que fue su infancia, la escuela, ¿fue a la escuela ahí en Benito Juárez? MG: Bueno, pues la escuela en aquellos tiempos casi se puede decir que no había escuela para uno, pero ahí onde yo vivía sí había escuela, pero había nomás hasta segundo año. AA: Hasta segundo año. MG: Nomás hasta ahí. AA: ¿Usted terminó hasta segundo? MG: Hice yo, terminé el segundo año y ya, ya no seguí más adelante porque taba fuera la escuela del pueblo y pues ya no podían mis padres. AA: ¿Qué tan lejos estaba? MG: Era más o menos como unas tres horas. AA: A sí estaba bastante lejos. MG: Sí estaba bastante retirado. AA: ¿Aprendió usted a leer y a escribir en la escuela? MG: Bueno, pues muy poco, pero sí, sí. Cuando menos mi nombre lo pongo bien. AA: Pues es lo que cuenta. MG: Pero sí aprendí poquito, lo mismo cuentas también más o menos. Aprendí poquito porque tuve un, tuve comercio, tuve una tienda. AA: Después de segundo grado, ¿fue a usted a otra escuela? MG: No, no, no fui porque ya no pude ir, pues. AA: Comercio por usted, por su lado. MG: Sí, comercio una tienda que puse yo personalmente. AA: Ah, qué bien. Entonces quiere decir que trabajaba usted mientras iba a la escuela, o, ¿solamente esto? MG: No, cuando iba a la escuela estaba chavalo, muy chiquillo. Ya cuando crecí ya de unos doce o trece años, ya más bien me traían trabajando en la labor. AA: En la labor, en la agricultura. MG: En la agricultura, sí. AA: ¿Qué hacían exactamente? MG: Ahí sembrábanos, sembrábanos maíz, sembrábanos frijol, sembrábanos algodón, alfalfa, chile y cacahuate. AA: ¿Eran cosechas propias? MG: Sí, propias, cosechas propias de uno y primeramente era, era temporal el… Todo lo que tenía de agricultura era temporal. Si llovía bien y si no, pues ahí se acaba todo. Pero ya después ya hicieron muchos pozos, artesanos y entonces ya regábanos con agua de pozo. AA: Ah, okay. Ya después aún cuando usted estaba… MG: Sí, ya hombre. Ya, ya estaba hombre y luego nos, sembrábanos y trabajábanos mucho, mucho trabajábanos para hacer la siembra, pero la hacíanos y luego cuando levantábanos la cosecha nos compraban la cosecha muy barata. AA: ¿De dónde venían a comprarle la cosecha? MG: De, pues venían de otros lugares. AA: ¿Del estado de Chihuahua o de…? MG: Sí, del estado, del estado y no, pero de todas maneras les vendíamos, pues, ¿para qué íbamos a querer lo que levábamos? Pues todavía el maíz, el frijol y todo eso sí, lo guardaba uno pa todo el año, pero lo demás tenía uno que venderlo. AA: Así es. ¿Se podría decir que ese fue su primer trabajo? MG: Sí, mi primer trabajo fue ese de la agricultura. AA: Después de la agricultura, ¿consiguió otro trabajo? MG: No, siempre trabajé en la pura agricultura ahí, propia. Era de nosotros las tierras y todo eso. Pero nomás ahí fue de agricultura y ya después cuando la braceriada, entré de bracero el primer año y luego después el segundo y el tercero. Como tres, tres años que vine de bracero. AA: Dígame, ¿cómo se enteró usted del Programa Bracero? MG: Bueno, el Programa Bracero entré, ya hace mucho que lo oigo yo, el… Yo creo que ya tiene tiempo, ¿no? Como unos, como unos cinco años, ¿no? AA: No, tiene mucho más. MG: ¿Tiene más tiempo? Bueno entonces yo me, yo había oído decir de este programa, pero pues no, no había, no me había presentado en ninguna parte, así como aquí ahora ustedes de… Pero ahora en estas, en esta semana, yo estoy en un lugar ahí que se llama Macsa, ande y usted trabaje para ellos, ¿no? AA: No, nosotros somos de El Paso. MG: Ah, de El Paso. Y entonces, ellos, ellos nos avisaron ahí que íbamos a, que iba a haber una junta y que todas la gentes que ya habíamos estado de braceros en aquellos tiempos, que íbamos a venir aquí a una junta. AA: Y, ¿cómo fue que usted se enteró en aquellos tiempos del Programa Bracero, de los inicios del programa? La primera vez que se fue, ¿cómo fue que se enteró? MG: No, pues la primer vez que me enteré yo fue aquí. AA: ¿Aquí?, ¿ya estando aquí? MG: Sí, aquí estaba en San José. AA: Bueno, y cuando estaba usted allá en Chihuahua, ¿cómo fue que se vino para acá, que se enteró que había trabajo en Estados Unidos? MG: Bueno, me vine porque tenía yo un sobrino que trabajaba aquí de, en Estados Unidos y yo pos no, no tenía muchas ganas de venir y al mismo tiempo tenía ganas de venirme porque yo y mi esposa nos habíamos disgustado, nos habíamos separado y entonces el sobrino ése mío me dijo: “Tío”, dijo, “si quiere ir para Estados Unidos”, dijo, “yo le consigo un pasaporte de ciudadanía”, dijo, “para si quiere irse”. Y luego le dije yo: “Déjame pensarle”, dije, “a ver cómo le hago”. Yo tenía mi labor preparada para siembra y todo eso ya con… Porque ya en esos últimos años nos daban crédito del Banco Ejidal y entonces ya... AA: Eso que me está platicando, ¿en qué año fue, más o menos? MG: Oh, ese año fue ahora como el [19]60 y como el [19]70 por ahí del [19]70 pa atrás. AA: Así es. MG: Y luego ya me dijo el sobrino que si quería venirme, él me conseguía una ciudadanía y le dije yo que sí. Le dije: “Bueno, seguro que sí voy, consíguemela”. Y sí me la consiguió, ¿ve? Y entonces me vine, nos venimos los dos, con él me vine. AA: Desde Chihuahua se vinieron a San José. MG: Desde Chihuahua, no. De Chihuahua nos fuimos a una frontera que se llama, ¿cómo se llama esa frontera? AA: ¿Dónde está? Dígame, yo le puedo ayudar. MG: Enseguida de Texas está, colinda con Texas. AA: ¿No fueron a El Paso? MG: No, con El Paso no, Ojinaga. AA: Ojinaga. MG: Ojinaga. Por ahí nos venimos y pasamos, pasamos el río lleno de agua, traía mucha agua y lo pasamos. Y luego el sobrino ése mío traía también una residencia, ciudadanía él, pero también era legal, ahí la había conseguido él. Entonces pasamos el... AA: ¿Ustedes se cruzaron el río? MG: Sí, el río. Cruzamos el río los dos y llegamos a un pueblito que se llama Presidio, Texas. Yo creo que lo ha oído usted mentar. AA: Claro que sí. MG: Bueno, entonces llegamos ahí y luego llegamos allá a un restaurancito que había y ahí estaba La Migración. Ya me dijo él, como él ya estaba pues muy toreado ahí en todo eso, me dijo: “No se vaya a agüitar tío, aquí va a estar La Migración”, dijo, “pero no, usted como, como nada”, dijo, “y si acaso le piden papeles, se los enseña”. Pos no, fíjese que no nos dijeron nada absolutamente. AA: ¿No les pidieron ningún papel? MG: Nada, ningún papel ni nos chequearon ni nada. Salieron ellos y se fueron. Y luego ya salimos nosotros y agarramos un autobús hasta Pecos, Texas y ahí en Pecos, ¿sí usted ha oído mentar Pecos? AA: Sí, claro que sí, sí. MG: Ahí en Pecos llegábamos y pues sin dinero y sin trabajo y sin nada. Nomás que él, el primo, el sobrino mío era muy, muy buen mecánico y entonces se acomodó ahí en una gasolinera a trabajar de mecánico. AA: Y, ¿usted qué hacía? MG: Y luego yo pues ya me, yo me, yo lo esperaba en la casa nomás en un cuarto que teníamos rentado. Y luego ya de ahí conseguí trabajo yo en el riego y me puse a regar como unos… AA: Riego de melones o, ¿qué estaban? MG: Riego que, regando, regando plantas, me parece que era cebolla. AA: Cebolla. MG: Sí, no me acuerdo pero me parece que era cebolla. Entonces así le hicimos, duramos como dos semanas ahí en ese, en el pueblo de Pecos, Texas. Y luego a las dos semanas dejamos el trabajo y nos fuimos a un pueblo que se llama Lubbock, Texas. AA: Lubbock, Texas, así es. MG: Y entonces ahí nos fuimos yo y él y otro señor que no lo conocíamos nosotros más que él lo había conocido ahí donde trabajaba de mecánico. Ahí lo había conocido al señor, pero el señor taba muy quemado con la ley. AA: ¿Tenía problemas? MG: Mucho problema con la ley y uno no sabía qué clase de persona era él. Entonces pos ahí trabajaba también él, de mecánico también con mi sobrino. Entonces ya un día llegó mi sobrino en la noche, oscureciendo y me dijo: “Tío”, dijo, “vámonos, vamos a brincar a otro lugar”. De ahí de Pecos. Entonces: “Sí”, le dije, “ pues yo estoy listo”, y bueno, dijo, “ahorita llegamos por usted”. Y llegaron por mí en una troquita, y el muchacho ese, el señor ese era el que la traía. Pero resulta que la traían robada la troca. AA: Válgame Dios. MG: Sí, luego uno sin saber pos: “Súbete y súbete y vámonos”. Y nos vinimos. Y llegamos a Lubbock, Texas y ahí parqueamos, parqueamos la troca en un parqueadero y fue cuando me dijo el sobrino mío que esa troca no era de ellos, del señor que era, la traía. Pues no, ahí la dejó, ahí la parqueamos y ya de ahí nos fuimos a pie al pueblo. AA: ¿Qué tan lejos estaba el pueblo? MG: No, ahí estaba en el mero centro en donde llegamos, estaba céntricamente y entonces de ahí nos fuimos y entonces agarró trabajo él, el conocido ese. Sí, porque pos sabía buen, muy buen inglés, pues era de aquí y se acomodó él allí. Y entonces nosotros también nos acomodamos, nomás que en el field pues, para trabajaba en el field. AA: En la siembra. MG: En la siembra. Pero ahí en ese rancho donde nos acomodamos, ahí en Lubbock, Texas, nos acomodamos en el riego y luego nos daban, nos dieron una troca a cada uno, una troca a mí y una troca al sobrino mío. Y ya nos pusieron a regar y entonces en los sábados, íbamos al, nos llevaba la señora del patrón al mandado, a que compráramos mandado. Y luego así estuvimos bien, trabajamos como unas cuatro semanas. Nos pagaban a peso la hora y trabajaba... AA: ¿A un peso o a un dólar? MG: Un dólar. AA: ¿Un dólar la hora? MG: La hora, y trabajábanos diez horas todos los días, eran $10 pesos diarios. AA: ¿Trabajaban los sábados? MG: Pues había veces que también los sábados trabajábamos. Entonces ahí duramos como cuatro semanas mientras que agarrábamos unos centavos y ya agarramos unos centavos y nos fuimos hasta Chicago, hasta Chicago, Illinois. Entonces llegamos a, agarramos los bus ahí en Lubbock, Texas y de ahí nos fuimos y llegando ahí dijo él, dijo: “Sabe que nos van a checar La Migración”, dijo, “en San Luis, Misuri”. Una ciudad muy grande, que muy bonita. AA: Muy bonita, sí. MG: Dijo: “Pero no se vaya a agüitar usted”, dijo. Porque no nos había checado en ninguna parte todavía. “No”, le dije, “no me agüito”, le dije, “pues ya traigo aquí los estos”, ya le dije, “pues a ver cómo nos va”. No, ya nos fuimos. No, ahí llegando a San Luis, Misuri se subió el emigrante a chequear en el bus. AA: ¿Qué les dijo? MG: Los papers, pos nos pidió los papeles. No, ya saqué yo la... AA: La tarjeta. MG: Okay, y okay. Entonces yo dije, bueno, pues ya nos, aquí ya libramos. No, llegamos a Chicago y en Chicago estaba una hermana de él que vivía ahí en Chicago. Estaba casada la muchacha, trabajaba ella. Ella estaba casada con un maestro de México y se vinieron y se fueron también hasta Chicago. Pos no, entonces ya llegamos ahí con la hermana de él que era sobrina mía y luego ya otro día nos salimos a buscar trabajo los dos, yo y él. AA: ¿En el campo también? MG: Sí, yo y mi sobrino. Y allá había mucho trabajo en las yardas para cortar zacate, podar árboles y que arreglar jardines y todo eso. AA: En casas, en patios. MG: Sí, en casas, pura gente millonaria, rica. Pues entonces ya ahí, ya nos fuimos los dos a buscar trabajo y entonces llegamos a un lugar donde se juntaba la gente y luego llegaban los patrones y lo, y ahí se lo... AA: ¿Lo recogían? MG: Lo recogían a uno los que necesitaban: “Tú vente”. Entonces ya llegó un patrón y luego ya me habló a mí. AA: Antes que me siga contando de eso, ¿usted participó en alguna contratación cuando estaba en Chihuahua?, ¿usted iba a juntas y, ahí había un centro de contratación para braceros? MG: Oh, sí. AA: Ah, ¿sí? MG: Sí, pues fue… AA: ¿Por qué no me cuenta un poco más de eso? MG: Bueno, deje contarle de eso. En esos tiempos había contratación ahí en Chihuahua. AA: ¿En la ciudad de Chihuahua? MG: En la ciudad de Chihuahua. Entonces ya oía yo mentar mucho Chihuahua contrataciones y todo eso, pero yo no sabía ni qué. AA: ¿Cómo le llamaban a eso? MG: Contrataciones. AA: ¿La bracereada, era la bracereada o contrataciones? MG: Sí, contrataciones, que contrataron en tal parte en… AA: ¿Cómo se dio cuenta? MG: Bueno, pues como del ahí iban gente a Chihuahua y todo eso. AA: Se pasó la voz. MG: Sí, se pasó la voz y entonces ya nos… Tenía yo un amigo que se llamaba Raúl y luego ya me dijo, dijo: “Vámonos”, dijo, ya llegó y dijo, “vámonos a ver si nos contratamos”. Le digo: “Pero fácil que esté muy difícil esa cosa”. “No”, dijo, “pos le hacemos la lucha”, dijo, “a ver cómo está”. Pos nos fuimos, llegamos a Chihuahua y pues llevábanos unas cuantas feriecillas nomás. Ya vimos el movimiento cómo estaba, no era un gentío, miles de almas. AA: ¿Ahí todas juntas? MG: Sí, todas juntas. Entonces ahí sacaba uno un número y por numeración. AA: ¿Dónde sacaba el número? MG: Ahí mismo en, en... AA: ¿Un día antes? MG: Sí, en donde estaba La Asociación de contratación. AA: ¿Qué era?, ¿una bodega o una oficina? MG: Sí, no, era bodegas estas que... AA: ¿Grandes? MG: Sí, grandes. AA: ¿Se acuerda dónde estaba, las calles? MG: Pos las calles, ahora verá. Taba, taba fuera de la ciudad, pero me parece que la calle se llamaba la Aldama. Aldama me parece que se llamaba. AA: Ah, qué bien. Bueno y, ¿sacaba un número y regresaba al día siguiente tempranito? MG: Sí, tempranito. Luego entonces si le tocaba a uno, pos salía y si no, pos duraba hasta quince o veinte días o meses. AA: Y, ¿qué hacían durante esos quince días? MG: Pues ahí navegándosela. AA: ¿Dónde dormían? MG: Pos en el, en la, en la afuera. AA: ¿Al aire libre? MG: Sí, sí, sí, al aire libre. Pues no, no había otra, otra lucha. AA: Sí, y, ¿cómo le hacían para mantenerse tantos días? MG: Pos también pa mantenernos lo poquito que llevábamos lo guardábanos para mal comer. Comíamos taquitos de a peso, ya... AA: ¿Ahí les vendían? MG: Sí, ahí nos vendían. Entonces ya de ahí cuando le tocaba a uno el día que ya salía uno, entonces ya le decían a uno que se presentara a tales horas. Ya íbanos y agarrábanos un tren. Puros trenes donde acarreaban ganado y todo eso, puro… AA: ¿Cómo es eso? MG: Puros, puros vagones. AA: ¿Ahí subían a todos los que habían salido? MG: Sí, ahí nos subían, sí, trenes largos, larguísimos. AA: Dígame y cuando entraba a esas, a lo que le llamaban las contrataciones, le… ¿qué les pedían? MG: Pues fíjese que no me acuerdo ni qué nos pedirían. AA: ¿Algún tipo de identificación o solamente con su nombre? MG: No, pues yo creo que nomás el nombre. No me acuerdo yo que hayan pedido de esta... AA: Identificación. MG: Identificación. AA: ¿Les hacían algún examen médico ahí? MG: Oh, eso sí. AA: ¿Sí? MG: Sí. AA: ¿Qué les...? MG: Eso sí, nos chequeaban todo el cuerpo y todo, todo nos chequeaban. AA: ¿Con rayos X o nada más? MG: Con rayos X y luego nos sacaban sangre. AA: Ah, ¿sí?, ¿ahí mismo en Chihuahua? MG: No eso ya era acá adentro en El Paso. AA: En El Paso. MG: En El Paso. AA: Allá en Chihuahua los pasaban con un doctor o, ¿cómo era el proceso? MG: Sí, nos pasaban con un doctor. No, ahora verá que no, no es así. No nos pasaban con ningún doctor. Donde nos venían a hacer el primer examen era aquí en El Paso en cuanto pasábanos. Entonces ya había lugares ahí donde taban, larguísimos los lugares. AA: Como bodegas tambien. MG: Sí, como, así con carpas. AA: Ah, okay. MG: Y entonces ahí nos sacaban, nos sacaban sangre y mucha gente pobrecita, cómo sufría, había unos que sufrían más que otros porque muchos no traían nada y muchos traíamos poquito de perdido para estar comiendo. Entonces nos sacaban sangre en unas camitas ahí que nos ponían, pero mucha gente se desmayaba. AA: Del susto. MG: Sí, del susto, pos sí. AA: Y no, no habían comido bien. MG: No, no pos estaba débil de a tiro, completamente la persona. AA: Y una vez que ya estaban contratados, ¿quién pagaba los gastos de viaje? MG: Bueno, cuando estábanos aquí adentro ya nos pagaba aquí el gobierno. AA: Pero por ejemplo, de Chihuahua a El Paso. MG: No, ahí no, no había ni un pago. AA: ¿Ustedes pagaron el tren? MG: No, el tren, el tren ése, ese sí lo ponían ellos. AA: Ah, okay. MG: Yo creo que las mismas compañías de aquí pagaban eso del tren porque ellos no son… No, a nosotros no nos cobraban. AA: Y me decía que eran así como vagones grandes. MG: Sí, pos puro vagón grande donde acarrean, donde acarrean ganado y todas esas cosas, carga. AA: ¿No les ponían banquitas y…? MG: Sí, sí. No, no era tren pasajero que fuera como lo hay, ¿verdad? AA: Cómodamente. MG: Sí, cómodamente no, no. AA: Y, ¿a cuántas personas subían en un vagón? MG: Pues en cada vagón yo creo que les metían, cabíamos como unos cincuenta en cada vagón, pero eran vagones como de cincuenta o sesenta, setenta carros, larguisísimos. AA: Y, ¿todos venían llenos? MG: Todos. AA: De gente que venían a trabajar. MG: Todos venían llenos. AA: Ah, qué bien. MG: Entonces ahí en El Paso ahí estaba la oficina de la contratación de donde, ya estando uno ahí ya le daban a uno comida. AA: ¿Qué les daban de comer? MG: Le daban, sándwich nos daban. Y ya ahí ya corríamos de cuenta de aquí y entonces ya cuando llegábamos, cuando llegábanos a El Paso, entonces ahí nos llevaban a una asociación muy grande que había. AA: ¿Dónde estaba esa asociación, se acuerda? MG: Ahí en El Paso, pero no me acuerdo dónde, en qué calle y qué. Pues ya hace muchos años, así que no se acuerda uno. AA: ¿Se acuerda qué año fue ése? MG: Las condiciones eran, eran barraca, eran barracas grandes y tenían los catres, tenía catrecitos de tres, de tres catrecitos, tres pisos. AA: ¿Como cuánta gente metían ahí? Entrevistando al señor Mauro González Gómez para el Departamento de Historia Oral de la Universidad de Texas en El Paso, Myrna Parra Mantilla. MP: Muchas gracias por aceptar la entrevista señor González. Para empezar la entrevista quisiera que me dijera, si se acuerda, ¿dónde y cuándo nació? MG: Ah, sí, en La Boquilla, Julimes. MP: Sí señor. ¿En qué año? MG: El 1929. MP: Y, ¿a qué edad usted empezó a trabajar, que se acuerde? MG: ¿De infancia? De doce años. MP: Y, ¿trabajando en la labor? MG: En la labor, sí, todo el tiempo en la labor. MP: Platíqueme, ¿cómo se dio cuenta del Programa Bracero?, ¿por qué le dieron ganas de irse allá como bracero? MG: Porque el municipio ayudaba a la gente y fue el que nos trajo la oportunidad desde Chihuahua donde había contratación. Porque así fue, el municipio nos echaba la ayudada, nos daba cartas pa llegar allá, pa no batallar pa entrar, así fue el primer año que empezamos. MP: Y se tuvo que ir a Chihuahua, ¿verdad? O, ¿aquí en Meoqui contrataban? MG: No, a Chihuahua, a Chihuahua. Y a veces tocaba que ese día no salíanos cuando nos avisaban de Julimes y nos llevaban. Durábanos dos, tres días ahí batallando porque había mucha gente. Les daban otra oportunidad a otras gentes que estaban más adelante. Pero ya a los dos, tres días sí entrábanos, ya nos íbanos. En el tren nos llevaban, todo el tiempo salíanos a las seis de la tarde, a las siete ya contratados y todo, comiditos y todo. Nos daban comida ahí en la bracereada en Chihuahua, que es nomás. MP: Ah, qué bueno. O sea que ustedes mientras esperaban el turno pues sí había donde comer y todo eso. MG: Sí había, había donde comer, estaba muy bien. MP: ¿Qué año fue?, ¿se acuerda? MG: El [19]49 fue el primer año. MP: Y, ¿cuántos años tenía usted más o menos cuando se fue para allá? MG: ¿El [19]49? MP: Como unos veinte años. MG: Veinte años cumplidos. Sí, pos nací el 9 de enero yo, agarré todo el 1929. MP: Y, ¿su familia qué le dijo cuando le dijo que se iba para allá? MG: No, pos mis padres taban ya avanzados ellos, luego se quedaron allí trabajando unos pedacitos de tierra que teníamos nosotros. Yo fui de la segunda esposa de mi padre. Ya ve que todo el tiempo, cuando ya se casan, todo el tiempo la familia mayor, pos se van del tronco, ya no se quedan y nosotros fuimos cuatro hermanos nomás de, cuando mi padre se casó con mi madre, joven ella todavía. Y: “No”, dijo, “pos váyanse a dar la vuelta a ver si, que suerte les toca”. MP: Ah, pues qué bueno, que le dieron el apoyo, ¿verdad? MG: Pero, pos sí. Pero como fui yo muy mala cabeza pos nunca hice nada porque tenía qué comer en mi casa. Usted sabe cuando uno tiene qué comer no se apura por llevar, ¿verdad? MP: Claro. MG: Así es, ¿verdad? Oiga, la realidad. MP: Oiga, y luego me decía que ya de Chihuahua los mandaban en el tren, ¿verdad?, hasta El Paso. MG: Sí, hasta El Paso. MP: Y ahí en El Paso, ¿qué, cuál era…? MG: No, hasta Juárez. Sí, ahí pasábanos en la mañana ya cuando aclaraba, a El Coliseo, ahí donde nos contrataban en esos años, los primeros años. MP: ¿Fue en El Coliseo? MG: Sí, los primeros años. MP: Porque algunas personas me dicen que en Río Vista. MG: Sí, pero… MP: ¿No se acuerda de haber oído de Río Vista? MG: Sí, después nos cambiaron para allá. Pero El Coliseo ahí estaba cerquita, nos íbanos a pie desde que pasábanos el puente, estaba cerquitas. Pero ya después como a los tres años, cuatro, ya cambiaron al Río Vista. MP: Ah okay. MG: Allá sí estaba bastante grande, como eran muchos miles de gentes que entraban. MP: ¿Mucha gente? MG: Sí, desde México, todos los estados, era mucha gente. Todos los días salía el tren hasta el full a Juárez. Sí, en la temporada que se venía, como ahorita, de mayo, septiembre eran pesadas las contrataciones porque septiembre metía mucha gente a la pisca. Y a los estados del centro también. Sí, y no, estaba muy suave, muy suave esos años. Y, pos ya después yo la última mica que saqué, la saqué de ahí de El Coliseo ése. Taba lejecitos desde El Paso pa allá, de perdida unos diez, quince minutos duraba el camión pa llegar. MP: ¿Estaba retirado? MG: Lo traiban a uno, lo traiban a uno de, del Río Vista o, ¿verdad? Dice usted que después, sí, el Río Vista. El Coliseo era el primerito que estaba en El Paso. Los primeros años que a mí me tocó estar, los primeros dos o tres años nomás. MP: Y, ¿tardaban mucho tiempo ahí en El Coliseo para que se los llevaran a los ranchos? MG: Había veces que sí, de un día para otro y había veces que hasta tres días porque había mucha gente y luego fallaban los patrones, no venían a pedir bastante gente. Y mucha gente, como le digo, los que ya estaban más quemados no querían entrar. Hablaban pa Pecos, Texas, pa Nuevo México y no entraba la gente, se colaba y se colaba, le daba pase a los más torpes, como era natural. Querían agarrar buenos puntos pa alla, ya de Colorado pa allá eran buenos puntos. MP: O sea que por lo general los que se iban a Pecos era que la gente que venía del sur de México, que no sabían. MG: Sí, y las que no habían ido de aquí también del estado de Chihuahua. Sí, así es. MP: Qué interesante que… MG: Sí. MP: Y luego ahí en El Coliseo mientras ustedes tardaban ahí hasta tres días. MG: Nos daban de comer. MP: ¿Sí había qué comer?, ¿para bañarse? MG: Sí, cómo no. Sí, todo, no, había baños en cantidad. No, estaba muy bien todo, ¿pa qué se va uno a quejar? Bien estaba. MP: Y, ¿a qué lugar fue la primera vez que usted se fue como bracero? MG: Pos a Pecos, ¿no le digo? MP: ¿A Pecos? MG: Sí, a la pisca. MP: Y ahí en Pecos cuénteme, ¿qué impresión le dio al llegar a Pecos? MG: Pues había muy buenos algodones en esos años, en el [19]49. Buenos algodones. Lo que, único que a mí me fallaba es que era malo pa piscar. MP: ¿Por qué?, oiga. MG: Pos piscaba nada más tres cincuenta libras, pero había gente que piscaba hasta seiscientas, se ganaban buen dinerito. MP: ¿Cuánto le pagaban más o menos por la libra?, ¿se acuerda? MG: Pos a $2.25. MP: Las cien libras, ¿verdad? MG: Sí, y el pima pagaban a $2.50, porque había un algodón pima grandote, que tenía un capullito muy trabajoso pa sacarse. MP: Y, ¿cuál era la diferencia? MG: Veinticinco centavos. MP: ¿Nada más? MG: Nada más. MP: Y, ¿el otro era más trabajoso que aquél? MG: Sí, el pima sí, por eso pagaban $0.25 más, $2.50. Taba regalado el trabajo pa los americanos en esos años. Les hacía uno mucho jale por muy poquito dinero. MP: Sí. MG: Yo había veces no sacaba más de $30 pesos, $35. Pos hay días que no piscaba ni las trescientas. Pos, ¿qué ganaba? $5 pesos. MP: Pos muy poquito. MG: Muy poquito, sí. MP: Oiga, y cuénteme ahí en Pecos, tengo entendido que siempre había mucha gente, que era un rancho… MG: ¡Uh qué barbaridad, no! Había barracas, la mayoría de los ranchos tenían barracas pa cien, doscientos hombres, ranchos muy grandes, mucha agricultura. Ahí, eso era lo único que sí estaba malo pa los braceros, vivían ahí como los animalitos ahí. MP: ¿Hechos bolas? MG: Sí, hechos bolas. A mí me gustaba todo el tiempo el catre de arriba. MP: ¿Por qué, oiga? MG: Porque abajo no me gustaba por muchas razones. Todo el tiempo me subía pa arriba y como todo el tiempo he tenido pos... Porque mucha gente loca hasta se llegó a golpear, se caíban, llegaban borrachos, yo nunca me gustó la tomada. Llegaban borrachos el sábado y el domingo y les tocaba su cuarto allá arriba y mucha gente se dio muy buenos golpes, pero borrachos. No, yo no, yo nunca pisteaba. MP: Hasta en el riesgo de que ahí se dieran un golpe en la cabeza y ahí quedaran, ¿verdad? MG: Sí, y ahí se quedaran. No, muchos se llegaron a matar. MP: Ah, ¿sí? MG: A otros los mataban en las jugadas, la baraja. MP: Ah, ¿sí?, ¿jugaban mucho a la baraja? MG: A mí me gustó mucho por eso nunca hice nada. Del [19]49 al [19]64 todo el tiempo andaba parejo, como un dicho que dice es que es como chévale, parejo toda la vida, nomás. (risas) MP: Platíqueme eso de las jugadas. MG: ¡Uh, es una chulada! Todavía me gusta, nomás que ya no tengo dinero, estoy muy fregado. MP: Ajá, pero eso era como… MG: No, pos amanecía, amanecíanos en la pócar. MP: Ah, ¿sí?, ¿en sus ratos libres? MG: No el sábado, agarrábanos el sábado pa estar listo y el domingo hasta las diez, si acaso pa dormir y amanecer el lunes otra vez a trabajar. MP: Pero, ¿cómo era eso de que hasta se mataban ahí por la jugada? MG: Pos se enoja la gente. Una vez un soldado del sur mató a un pobre ahí también. MP: ¿Cómo? MG: Precisamente ahí en Pecos. MP: ¿Sí? MG: Sí, pos el soldado todo el tiempo anda grifo y le ganaron toda la lana ahí, entonces se las quitó con la navaja y el bato no se la quiso dar y le atacó la navaja. MP: Y, ¿era bracero el…? MG: Eran braceros todos, sí también el soldado era, pero era del sur. MP: Ah, ¿el soldado también era bracero? MG: Sí también, pero ya, pero ya estaba retirado, de esos que se retiran, pero siguen las mismas costumbres de cuando ellos están en el Ejército, ¿sí me entiende? MP: Se quedan así con los sueños de autoridad, ¿verdad? MG: Sí y chupando grifa y todo, usted sabe que… Y ya le digo ese, ese caso me tocó verlo. MP: Y, ¿ahí ustedes…? MG: Y hasta se fue el pelado, no lo agarró la ley. MP: ¿No lo agarró? MG: Yo le voy a decir una cosa, en Estados Unidos cuando matan a un mexicano, por nada, lo ven como un perro, se pela y ni lo buscan. Yo tengo unos hijos en Wichica [Wichita], también un hijo mío también es vago y le tocó ver a otro que mataron ahí y era amigo de él al que mataron. No, to[dovía] a las once de la mañana andaba durmiendo el pelado que fueron a dicirle los amigos: “Ándale ya se murió el que picaste anoche”. MP: ¡Órale! MG: “¿Cómo?”. “Sí”. Se levantó y otro hermano lo sacó y se lo llevó, no lo agarraron tampoco. Fíjese, pero sí eso sí es realidad. Pero que, que sea un americano, inmediatamente se mueve la ley. MP: Y entonces ahí el ranchero… MG: No. MP: ¿No les prohibió ya que sigan jugando? MG: Sí, nos prohibió en ese rancho ya. Sí, no, ya no volvimos a jugar. MP: Oh, ¿no los castigó? MG: Porque dijo que nos echaba la ley. No, no, pos usted sabe que el culpable es el que paga, pos se peló el pelao, los demás no nos podía probar si estábanos jugando o no estábanos, ¿verdad? Nomás al que mataron. Vino la ley por la jugada porque le quiso quitar el dinero que le había ganado, no se lo entregó el bato y lo picó, lo mató. Pero se fue, ya le digo, eran como la una de la mañana. Se peló, no lo agarró la ley. No, pos de todos modos se llevó el dinero el bato. MP: Claro. MG: Usted sabe, un soldado tiene muchas agallas, por eso están ahí. No crea que es tan fácil ese jale, es duro pa cualquier mexicano, pero el que aguanta sí, sí logra tener muchas agallas ahí. Se llevó el dinero, nomás llegó… Por allá otros amigos de allá del rancho y pagó quien lo llevara al pueblo luego luego, se peló. A esas horas, ¿qué?, ¿cuál ley? Iban a agarrar, agarró el camión y se salió pa acá fuera. No lo volvieron a ver nunca jamás. MP: Oiga, y luego, o sea ese era el problema de por haber tanta gente, ¿no? MG: Sí, no, pero las jugadas, muy pocas gentes se va a las jugadas, la mayoría de la gente cuida su dinero, de su trabajo. MP: Pos a eso se va, ¿verdad? MG: Exacto, sí. Pero todos los que hemos sido viciosos desde infancia no se da uno, no se está, mientras ande en dinero no se está quieto hasta que no va a jugar en los juegos que sea. Cuando está serio como ahorita yo, estoy fregadón porque hay silencio. Si hubiera dinero, me mantenía en las carreras ahí. Porque hay carreras en Chihuahua cada ocho días, muchas. MP: O sea que ha sido… MG: ¿No, no conoce Chihuahua? Sí, sí… MP: Sí, soy de ahí. MG: Ey, pa que vea, ya ve cada ocho días hay carreras, ya tiene muchos años. Sacan mucho dinero. MP: Fíjese. MG: Mucho dinero, a $20 pesos el bote, a $70 la chuleta. Y sabe, una vez, yo también andaba en ese rollo, tenía un amigo ahí que nos llevaba de Delicias a varios, nos cobraba $15 pesos atrás. Y llevábamos dos muchachas que trabajan en las cantinas aquí cuando hay carreras y no les quisieron dar, cuando Barrios, no, le dijeron: “Tráiganos una orden de la esposa de Barrios”. Las esposas de los presidentes son las jefas de las carreras, ganan dinero. MP: Ah, ¿sí? MG: ¿Usted se imagina a $20 pesos cerveza? MP: No, pues ahí está el negocio. MG: Y a $70 la chuleta. ¡Negociazazo tremendo! Ganan de $40 a $50 cada ocho días, más que el presidente que gana ahí en el puesto, la esposa, dice, porque es la que lleva las riendas de las carreras. MP: ¡Andele! ¿Qué tal, eh? MG: Cuando Barrios fue eso, le estoy platicando, cuando Barrios, sí. No le dieron chanza a las pobres muchachas, se vinieron muy tristes las pobrecitas. Es su vida, de eso viven ahí cuando hay carreras, andar vendiendo cerveza. MP: ¡Claro! MG: Ey. No le dijeron ahí, la que la hacía de jefa: “No, aquí no, si no traes orden de la esposa de Barrios no te damos permiso”. No, no le dieron quebrada de vender. MP: Oiga, y volviendo con los braceros y a propósito de política y todo esto, ahí en El Coliseo, ¿no había algún representante del Gobierno Mexicano? MG: Cómo no, sí había un cónsul que le dicen. MP: ¿Un cónsul? MG: Y otro americano. MP: Y el cónsul, ¿ahí qué hacía? MG: Pos vía [veía] por los braceros de aquí. Vía por los braceros que, pos a veces procuraba a veces, cuando tenía oportunidad de mandarlos a buena parte, ¿verdad? Aquí a todo el estado de Chihuahua todo el tiempo los protegía, más que al sur. No, no, pos nosotros estábanos en un ranchito separado de la tienda, de los otros ranchos donde estaban la demás gente, ahí estábanos en la orilla. MG: No, pos lleva uno su provisión completa y se junta uno con un camarada dos, de los que más o menos ve que son livianones pal jale, porque hay unos que mucho muy flojos. MP: ¿Sí? MG: Les gusta dormir y nomás levantarse a comer. MP: A comer. MG: Muy pronto se corta uno la compañía. Ya ve que los mexicanos en compañía duran muy poco. MP: Entonces ustedes del cheque, del pago que les daban, ¿de ahí ustedes tenían que ir a comprar sus provisiones? MG: Sí, el mismo patrón tenía tienda muy buena. Venían por nosotros al rancho, otros que estábanos orillados de onde había el…Ahí en el rancho tenía varias barracas, pero pa la gente que estaba ahí cerquita. Y venían por nosotros todos los sábados que nos pagaban, llevábamos la provisión y nos la llevaban hasta allá otra vez, otra vez hasta el otro sábado cada ocho días nada más. Pero la pasábanos muy suave en ese rancho, yo estuve muy a gusto en ese rancho, ahí en Las Ánimas, Nuevo México. MP: Las Ánimas, Nuevo México. MG: Sí, son unos algodonales tremendos ahí, ¡qué barbaridad! MP: Y, ¿alguno de los rancheros no le propuso que si se quedaba? Que le arregle… MG: No, yo fui muy rebelde toda mi vida. Yo nomás trabajaba tres, cuatro meses y me venía a pasearme aquí toda la temporada, ¿cómo la ve? Tengo setenta y cuatro años, no estoy muy viejote para esa edad, ¿verdad? MP: Pos no. MG: No, no, no, trabajaba nomás unos cuatro meses por año. Me gustó la categoría nomás que nunca la pude lograr. (risas) MP: O sea que nada más tres, cuatro meses trabajaba y luego ya, después… MG: Por ahí me venía. MP: Y sacaba nomás de la pura jugada, ¿verdad? Para sostenerse todo el año. MG: Sí, me… No, hubo temporadas que compraba animales yo aquí en mi tierra, bastantes. MP: Y luego para renovar el contrato, ¿no batallaba? MG: No, yo nunca lo renové, hubo camaradas míos que duraron dieciocho meses con buenos patrones. Todo el que era traptorista [tractortista], regador, casi no los dejaban salir los gabachos, son muy listos los gabachos, ¿verdad? Todo el hombre que le rinde mucho el trabajo, lo procuran. Yo no, no, a mí no me gustaba mucho el trabajo, iba nomás por traer unos centavitos ahí pa pasarla, ¿verdad? Y la jugada que me daba mucho dinero, pero… MP: Pos ta bien. MG: Esa gente, que trabajaba pos sí se chicoteaba, hubo muchos camaradas míos, dieciocho meses les daban. Cumplían los tres meses, que era el contrato mínimo que llevaba uno, tres meses. Después si había mucho jale renovaban otros tres. Entonces ellos ya cuando vían que era buen traptorista, buen trabajador, buen regador, les daban un contrato de dieciocho meses, duraban buenas temporadas. MP: Pos mucho tiempo. MG: Sí, era buen dinero, dieciocho meses, pos haga de cuenta que era usted residente, no tenía pendiente de la ley, ¿verdad? MP: Y, ¿usted nunca tuvo problemas con La Migra o algo con la ley? MG: Nunca. Sí, sí me agarraron pero me echaban fuera esa misma tarde. MP: ¿Pero usted siendo bracero? MG: No, no, de mojado, cuando yo fui de mojado. MP: Ah, ¿después fue mojado? MG: No, antes. MG: Y, nomás por el mismo delito, de ir de mojado. ¡Y a varios!, no nomás él. Hubo batos que se murieron, salieron anémicos completamente, sí, de La Peni [Servicio Penitenciario Nacional]. MP: Pero pos era mejor, irse de bracero, ¿no?, aunque fuera ya… MG: Pos sí, pero, todavía el [19]47 todavía no había. Hubo antes el [19]45 y [19]46, pero yo no tenía la edad. MP: Ah, estaba muy chiquito. MG: Que el [19]45 tenía dieciséis años y no admitía. Y fueron a los traques toda esa gente y ganaron mucho dinero, si viera cómo ganaron dinero en traques. MP: Pero, o sea, de todas maneras ahí en El Coliseo, ¿sí había gente que iba para contratar para el ferrocarril, o nada más puros rancheros? MG: Sí, pos no recuerdo muy bien, pa no echarle mentiras. Pa que es más que la verdad, pero casi creo, no, que ya de esa épocas pa allá, ya casi pura gente residente trabajaba, casi creo, pero no, no creo yo que de bracero no iban al ferrocarril. Casi no, no creo, ¿cómo la ve? MP: Y ustedes, sí tenía visa. Pos sí, ¿verdad?, venía para acá. MG: Sí, no yo nomás… MP: ¿Tenía mucho contacto con su familia? MG: Lo más que duraba eran tres meses, cuatro. MP: Y cuando iba otra vez, ¿tenía que hacer otra vez fila en Chihuahua y…? MG: Conseguíanos cartas en el municipio. ¿No le digo que nos echaban de buena fe la ayudada los municipios? MP: Pero era todo desde el principio, ¿verdad? O sea, no porque usted ya tenía experiencia ya… MG: No, no, es que se compartieron ahí con el jefe de la contratación y ya les daba chanza. Según el municipio que estaba muy caído les daban sus… No muchas, no crea, era una rifa. Nos anotaban a la mayoría de la gente y ahí nos sorteaban, a veces no le tocaba a uno salir con carta, pero le buscaba uno por otro lado. Yo aquí en México conseguí dos veces cartas compradas. MP: ¿Cuánto le costaban las cartas? MG: Doscientos pesos en esa época. MP: Pos era mucho dinero. MG: Era mucho dinero, sí, sí, sí. Dos veces salí, me parece que el [19]49, porque no salí allá. Puedo suponerle que metían trescientas gentes de Julimes, a veces salían con cartas unos setenta, nomás. MP: ¿Tan poquitas? MG: Sí, pos a veces había mucha gente, miles de almas en Chihuahua, oiga. De toda la república, venían desde todos los estados, oiga. Tenían que compartirle a todos los estados pa que estuviera saliendo la gente, sí. Nomás que a veces mire, salían esos poquitos y luego le volvían a llorar los presidentes al… Ya cuando pasaba un mes y cacho y les daban otras poquitas, entonces ya alivianaban a otra poquita gente también. Así se la estuvieron llevando. Sí, yo nomás dos veces no me tocó salir de allá del municipio, pero sí conseguí aquí. MP: Oiga y ahí en El Coliseo, ¿les hacían algunos exámenes médicos?, ¿los vacunaban? MG: Sí, cómo no. Sí, perfectamente bien todo ahí, ¡todo! Desnudo tenía uno que entrar ahí. A que sale examen de todo, ey. No, sí, estaba muy bien, ahí el que estaba enfermo lo retachaban pa tras. A los panaderos que no tenían ni un callo en la mano, también, también los retachaban. MP: ¿Panaderos? MG: Sí, pos muchas veces usted sabe por ir a ganar un dinero más, ¿verdad? Se colaban ahí que tenían influencia conseguían la carta. Pero, no, ¿pos que le voy a decir a usted? Pos Estados Unidos es muy listo. Ahí tenían un especialista, ahí uno revisaba los callos, otro los dientes y todo y nomás con que no tuviera ni un callo no, dice: “Tú no bueno pa trabajar, vámonos pa atrás, alista tu mochila”. Ya juntaban quince, veinte, que les daban pa atrás y ya los echaban en el camión y vienen, los aventaban otra vez a Juárez pa que no perdieran su tiempo, porque… Pues a El Paso, nomás, los camiones de ahí, nomás a El Paso. Pero de ahí se iba uno a pie ya. Sí, pero sí retachaban mucha gente también, eso le voy a decir, no crea que todos se lograba pasar. MP: O sea que, ese, vamos a decir, ese como examen de las manos, ¿no se los hacían desde aquí desde El Trocadero? MG: No. MP: Y ya no tenían que echar tanta gente. MG: No, aquí daban quebrada, más o menos daban quebrada, pero allá sí, allá no se pasaba ni uno. No, o un dependiente, bueno un dependiente que toda la vida a trabajado ahí en el lápiz, tiene igual las manos que un panadero, completamente, ¿verdad? También retachaban mucha gente, mucha gente retachaban por ese motivo, y un que otro que salía enfermo. Ahí gritaban por micrófono: “Fulano de tal”. A la parte fulano donde tenían todas las chivas. “Que venga por sus chivas porque ahorita sale en camión a El Paso”. MP: O sea que ahí los llamaban por el micrófono. MG: Sí, no, no taba bien arreglado todo, bien arreglado todo completamente. MP: Y por ejemplo, ustedes cuando les iban a poner las inyecciones, las vacunas, ¿les decían de que era una vacuna contra algo, algo así, o nada más les ponían las vacunas? MG: Pos ya no me acuerdo muy bien de ese jale, oiga, ¿pa qué más que la verdad? Pero no, no estoy muy seguro si nos vacunaban, oiga. O aquí en Chihuahua, no me acuerdo, pa que es más que la verdad. MP: Dice también que los polveaban, ¿verdad? MG: No, eso sí. No dejaban ni un piojo bueno, todos se morían. (risas) Todos, unas polveadotas tremendas. MG: Sí, mayormente acá todos revolcados como los burros que íbanos desde El Trocadero. Hijo de la chingada sí, yo creo que sí, sí nos vacunaban, pero ya le digo, estoy recordando yo que sí parecí que sí había unas enfermeras ahí con guantes y todo. Una vez me pasó un caso, ahí en Texas, volví otra vez a Texas, me robaron toda la lana. Tenía tres días jugando, viernes, sábado y domingo. Ya estaba rendido y fui a acostarme como a la una de la mañana porque iba a la pisca el lunes. Y procuré poner la camisa, me quité la camisa y la puse debajo de una almohada que hacía uno de costales ahí. Y este camarada yo creo, pos ya me habían visto, que era muy jugador, y no lo sentí, me la robó con todo y dinero, como unos $300 dólares esa vez. Esa vez sí le tocó, me tocó, le tocó perder al gallo giro, pos sí me fregaron. (risas) Pero estaba rendido, tres veces desvelado ya. Amanecer viernes y sábado y el domingo hasta la una. MP: Pos es que ya lo conocían, ¿no? MG: Ya me conocía en ese rancho. Sí, pos durábanos tres meses casi en todos los ranchos cuando íbanos. Sí me fregó un amigo de la sierra, de ahí de San Isidro. Yo le dije al mayordomo, le dije: “Qué manera habrá de traer la Judicial”. “No”, dijo, “no puedes probarle”, dijo, “como tú dices que él, por lo largo que es, pero donde no sea, donde sea otra gente más mansita”. No existe El Coliseo todavía ya no existe en El Paso. Porque aquí hay una muchacha Mona que trabaja ahí, es de Guadalupe y esa les arregla muchos papeles de pensionados. Y mi mica, me dice el muchacho, dijo: “Tráigamela”. Ya hace más de año que se sonó mucho que nos iban a dar dinero y que la fregada. Yo mandé mi mica y dijo: “No”, dijo, “las copias no sirven, traiga la mica”. Y me creí y se la di y ahora ya no me la quiere traer el camarada, vive en Juárez. MP: Ah, ¿sí?
